Oil worries on Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

My level had dropped off the dipstick at the weekend. Needed a litre pouring in which was a task on it's own as the filler opening isn't the best.

Mileage just under a thousand now.

Using oil to me means it's certainly bedding in, and it should slow down when it's fully run in.

Sharkrider, I think your car was made by Audi, it seems too well put together!

lol.. nope, I was bouncing it off the rev limiter at 14 miles on the first slip road after picking it up from the dealer though!

A Pattern seems to be emerging that cars that got well run in are not using much oil.

My RX8 I came from to the vRS used approx. 1 litre every 1,000 - 1,200 miles and that was quite a lot of oil. Anyones using this sort of level may want to mention it to there dealer, although with the engine being twin charged it may take up to 5,000 miles to settle down.

It is weird that some are using quite a lot - you always knew you were an oil guzzler with a RX8 :giggle:

RX8's are a different kettle of fish thouygh right?! what with the rotary engine and all... I thought they were designed toi use oil....

run in its a world of a better engine... I'm up to 5,500 miles now, and its MUCH quicker, and MUCH better on fuel now... so fast I don't even feel the need for a remap, and regulaly getting 47 mpg on a 'normal' run of mixed a-roads, dual carrigeway and town (not breaking th elimits... that really brings the MPG down! lol..) after the fiat some things bugged me (oil usage, lack of equipment, average handling... but now the engine is run in, MY what an engine! it is a revelation! and now I have learned to use the gearbox to suit me, its even better, don't think I will ever go back to manual again, and (as long as I stay on the fewer miles, i.e less than 40k a year, i will stay with the modern forced inuction petrols rather than diesel ;) )

D.

all good stuff

Interesting read Sharkrider :)

Best run mine in well then... never had a brand brand new car, had ex demo's and the like :)

Oh, no I lie - had a brand new Astra 1.4 16v in 2004 and that was pretty good :)

I'm with Sharkrider, there really is no need to drive a car really gently from new. Car engines are dyno tested at higher than standard RPM's (so above 7K) before they are put in the car so in essense they've been thrashed before they have even been bolted into the car.

Manufacturers generally design and tune engines to be reasonably unstressed, the 1.4 TSi 180ps engine is clearly capable of producing more reliable power (with a remap), could probably live quite happily with a slightly higher rev limit too, but its all "downtuned" intentionally to give it the longest service life possible. Also gone are the days of having vastly mechanically different engines for different models, all the twincharger units in all VAG variants are essentially the same engines, bar running slightly different maps. There may be some subtle turbo/intercooler differences but these are by the by.

Getting to the point, you are really doing your car very little harm at all driving it hard from new, so long as you wait until its warm and make sure you keep a close eye on the levels.

I got my Golf 2.0 TDi CR from a woman driver after 4700 "gentle miles" and i've hammered it ever since up to 27K. It's used a litre or oil in 18K and hasnt used a drop in 9K. Not bad for an "oil burner". It's loosened up very nicely, is still very refined and will get over 60mpg on a good run and will average 47-48 mpg everywhere.

Only thing I have to complain about is the VAG group soft paint, my car is now peppered with stone chips, being black shows quite badly too. That its a company car cant really bring myself to buy a touch-up stick haha!

Sharkrider - yes RX8's do use a decent amount of oil to lube the rotary engine and tips, but its not as horrific as 'the man down the pub' makes out.

Unless you had a track day with the car then most people used around a litre per 800 - 1,200 miles in general. Although its a lot more than most cars its not that bad at approx £ 7 a litre for the specific oil it uses.

On the vRS I have driven it normally and to be honest am surprised I have not used something in 700 miles since new as when i joined the forums in December it seemed that for the first couple of thousand miles they did use a bit.

Am taking the car to the Lake District next week so a round trip of probably 800 - 900 miles. So that will bring my mileage up a good chunk and ill check the oil at the start and at the end. (carrying of course 1 litre in the boot just in case.).

Ill report back over Easter if any usage after this trip.

Cheers

cool. I didn't top up until 3,000 miles, then about half a liter, no more since. when are you up in the Lakes exactly? I live here, and gillywibble are up week starting 23rd, I'm taking him up hartside pass, i've posted it in the NW meets section, if more are interested, I may extend the drive , or do wryno's and hardnott, depending on how many we get

Thanks. Up on the 18th, going back on good Friday - 22nd.

Ill look at the post in the meets, but not sure wife and kids will let me wander off.... but you never know.....

Cheers

Just topped mine up for the first time - half a litre after 1300 miles.

I notice in the handbook it says to check the oil level when the engine is 'warm'. What is 'warm' exactly (I think it's a bit vague) ?

I took it to mean after a run but let the engine cool down before switching it off then check the oil.

So the general consensus seems to be that when you get a new vRS just drive it as normal. In my case this is quite hard but obviously letting it warm up and cool down properly. The demonstrator I tried today had 5k on the clock and seemed well run in. Felt quicker than the first one I tried a few months ago.

without a doubt mine is quicker now with 5,000 miles on than when it was new  also better on fuel :)

Just an updated on mine. Back from a 750 trip to the lake district which brings total mileage to 1,550 and just checked it and finally used a little. Needed 250 ml top up to bring it to full.

Car driven 'normally' since new.

Hope this helps.

Just put 500ml in the Fabia..+ needs more..

Only half way on the dipstick still :S

How long since last fill up Chris? And how many miles done total?

Good news here I think.....1700 miles done and only needed about 300ml for full. Thats after 10800 miles.

6,000 miles and 750 mil so far.

First time filled up since new..3500 miles :S

Hi Guys,

Well I've had my VRS since November last year and took the car back in Jan due to the oil light coming on. They didn't seem concerned and filled it up which looked like around 1.5 to 2 litres. Nothing thought about it since everyone seems to think it takes a few thousand to bed in. Well I have now got 6 and a half thousand on the clock from new and since Jan I have had to put in a further 4 litres! To be honest I drive the car to and from work and have no choice but to hang around the speed limit due to being urban running. (One speeding ticket since getting it in this obsessive speed policed country was one too many!) At around £50 quid for 4 litres of Castrol Edge this is a seriously expensive car to run. You might say why get a VRS then but it was the most economical car with some go since I had to let go of my rusty Scooby :( This amount of oil consumption doesn't seem like it is going to reduce with my road use so not sure what to do next apart from get rid.

Going by what others have said I'll be driving like sharkrider does which was hard from day one once it was warm. My parents Swift had 8k when they bought it 2 years ago and I've driven it fairly hard everytime I use it and it doesn't use a drop of oil.

So the thing to do is give it some welly, rather than drive like an O.A.P seems it's the reason it's using oil

I drive mine hard most days as i mainly drive country roads and have still used 3l in 3000 miles

According to the book they are supposed to use a bit of oil

Its a VW thing apparently according to my mate from the RAC

my record is 1 litre in first 10k, and now over 14k and no oil used since 10k service, so last 4k no oil used

Our vRS used 1 litre in 1,000 miles, I mentioned it to the dealer and they said it is normal, the car has done 1,300 miles now and oil is still near maximum.

Problem we have is the wife doesn't go far, the car was brand new in March and it has only just done 1,300 miles! I got a new Yeti two weeks ago and it has done 2,350 miles already (170 TDi and it hasn't used any oil!)

I will keep putting oil in the Fabia as and when it needs it, eventually it will settle down it would seem after reading the threads above.

I've not had any oil usage in the last 2-3k miles. Which seems to reflect the same situation as Sharkrider. I've done 15500 miles so far.

update: now 14500 and it seems I'm due my first top up since the service, dipstick about halfway between min-max.. however this is on my driveway, and I find it reads less than when parked more level at work, so will check it again tonight! will update if it needs topping up, I suspect 250mil will be going in tonight ... not too excessive for 4500 miles I think... if I left it, it would probably make it to the next 10k service without a top up, but I will of course keep it near max ;)
