Oil worries on Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

The oils we are using (Castrol Edge in my case) are fully synthetic and therfore have a far higher thermal tolerance, that is, they are not as volatile as the same viscosity grade mineral based oil that we would have used some years ago.

In relation to oil consumption, i am now starting to have some concerns. Upto the first srvice (9400 miles) i added something like 1.5 litres, since this service and having covered a further 5000 miles i have added a further 3 litres, almost a complete oil change (3.8 litre oil capacity irc). still below VW possible expected usage but a complete change on an engine that should be settling down.

Just wondering how you drove the car up to the 9400 miles and then for the next 5000 miles as I've pushed the car alot and even still it was no oil till about 3000 miles then a bit upto 5000miles then a fair chunk upto 9000 miles and its service and in then 1000 miles since service its not needed any intervention as yet but its not been pushed properly since its winter.

In all honesty I think part of the problem is people being gentel on the engines. Now let me explain why I think if the engine is driven gently while cold it is not sealing properly and is hence allowing petrol to contaminate the oil. Once the engine then reaches proper operating temprature the petrol vapourises off, however between the petrol contamination and the pertol vapourising I suspect that some of the oil petro mix is being burnt/ evaporated off in someway to keep the level down/leaving you short of oil.

Hope this makes sence as its late and I've already had to edit it twice for spelling

Sharkrider and Can, to both your comments.

Possibly have been driving the car a little gentler recently due to weather/time of year which may be a reason for the increased oil consumption and hear the point about fuel dilution. however on that point my daily commute is 38 miles each way (hence my higher mileage) so should be minimal as the engine does get warmed through quite nicely. I will keep a good eye on it and about to do a 500 mile round trip to Lincolnshire this weekend (must remember to look out for Brimma, gold wheels should be a giveaway). Have a new can of Castrol in the boot just in case.

I've just clocked 9k in mine..It's used about 3L of castrol edge..Drove it fairly normally from new..thrashed it now and then when the oil got up to temp..Some people have suggested the consumption would get less with time..It seems the same albeit not excessive by the sound of it..I have to top up a little every couple of weeks.

everyone remember what the book says too... if its just a bit off max leave it..... (its perfectly safe between min and max, I've only ever topped up mine when its got to half way between or lower) there is a pic in the manual showing where you should leave it and not top up...it actually says DONT top up at this level...

maybe this could be a reason for some people using more? constantly topping up that last little bit from 3/4 to max? then the engine constantly settling down to 3/4 between min and max?

I've had my vrs for a month now and done 1200 miles. Due to all the oil useage threads i've been a bit obsessed about checking. From 10 miles on the clock it's been just over the 3/4 mark and hasn't noticably changed. My style of driving is usually gently until oil temp over 70, then drive more normally giving it a boot when possible, however in normal conditions this is not very often. I will continue to check every week.

cool :) fancy being a guinea pig? dont top it up unless it gets to half way or below, and see if it uses much ;)

that's my intention, will update on any changes to oil level
