Needle Sweeping (not home economics!) Sorted

Featured Replies

Hi,

The long talk about Staging (Needle Sweeping), I have finally got it sorted with a guy near me. He also did a number of other things ie cornering fog (interesting feature, didn't notice much difference, possibly not dark enough) , auto door locking and unlocking and something on the Bolero, which was showing fault code as it wasn't coded before it was fitted to the car.

We tried Coming Home and Leaving Home light for quite a while, we still couldn't get it sorted. I am wondering what I can do? Being a S model owner, I do not have the luxury of auto light or light sensor (there isn't "via personalisation" on the VCDS). What I have found is if I turn off the ignition, take the key out, push for high beam for 2 seconds and open the door, the light would stay on. But I also found I have to do this everytime I want to do that, and when I unlock the car, the light would not come on.

I am wondering what we have been doing wrong? Would really appreciate replies!

Thanks!

Sorry, but dumb Luddite question.

Are you saying that with the "magic box" connected to the car you can make "cornering fog lights" work?

Auto light and rain sensing needs an extra sensor fitting behind the mirror mount; it isn't a simple "magic machine" job.

I did the coding on the original post's Yeti, Cornering fog lights is just a tick box to activate on his car.

Sorry, but tick box where? (non-technically please)

To me that implies it is within the MFD.

Graham, and I am sure i will be corrected if wrong, this is to do with connecting either a laptop or a special hand-held device (like the original Psion thing?) to the car's diagnostics.

You then get various levels of software which delve into the workings of the car. Some of these contain switches which can turn on or off some of the more intricate workings of the system. This is indeed similar, and linked to, the MFD display where we the drivers get to customise our SMs - like turning off the cornering lights or the coming home feature.

As you know, some of these customisable features are only available on Elegance specced cars, but the switch in the software still exists. That means, if i'm right, that with the right laptop and programming software, owners with lower spec cars can turn on the come-home feature, for example, or needle-sweep.

[As a comparison, in the Hi-Fi world back in the 70s and 80s companies like Pioneer and Rotel would have a range of, say, six amplifiers varying in price from £100 , to £150, to £200, up to £500 - all of which look absolutely identical, yet with different spec. And inside every single amp would be exactly the same circuits and processors. The cheaper lesser models merely did not have certain bits connected together inside!!]

SO - the "tick box" you ask about is in the programming software which resides in the laptop, and when "ticked" it will alter something permanently in the car that the owner desires.

I hope that this helps a bit in understanding the process - if indeed I am corect!!

George, thanks for that, I presumed so, but wanted confirmation.

Since I like the idea of the cornering lights I suppose the next thing to do is find someone with the "knowledge" reasonably local to do it.

Wonder if the dealer would when it goes in for servicing?

Yours must be the SE ?

If you CAN get the lights to corner, for the xenon only, I think, (but then they should do it already?) it is a great benefit.

Good luck w it.

George,

I'm presuming that "My_Yeti" doesn't have HID lights as his is a S model, and yes you are correct, mine is an SE with halogen lights. Perhaps one of them will confirm?

You dont know if youve got HID bulbs??? :giggle: :'( :'(

The original posts car just had standard bulbs.

Since 1994 the VAG group has had options which can be changed (selective unlocking etc).

Only in the last 7 years has there been the option to upgrade the dash to enable the driver to do the diy adjustments.

I use VCDS which is just a lead and laptop to work on cars without the high spec dash.

Just from memory, for the original post's Yeti I was able to change; Cornering fogs. Emergency braking hazard lights. Auto locking. Dash staging.

Yup confirm to be non HID, just cornering fog not cornering headlight.

On the cornering fog lights do they just come on when you are about to take a corner and then flick off afterwards? I have driven a citroen c5 with this gizmo and it really is very effective. I have never really thought about how they work. If they flick on and off constantly will it not shorten the bulb life considerably?

Did you go to a "local man" because the dealer wouldn't do these changes or just because it was cheaper? If you don't mind the cheek, how much was it?

Hi,

The left spot light turns on when I turn left and turns off when I go straight, and vice versa, it only works at low speed though, well at least I didn't notice it working when driving more quickly.

I haven't tried the local dealer, but I thought the VAG com couldn't sort this out. If you look at the brochure, the cornering fog is a rather pricey option on the SE (not available on the S) and I doubt the dealer would switch this on.

aham_uk is very close to me and it make sense to go to him rather than the dealer and he is advertised on ebay.

We tried Coming Home and Leaving Home light for quite a while, we still couldn't get it sorted.

This feature can only work if you have the light sensor in the mirror I'm afraid. Otherwise the lights will come on in the day as well so the car needs to know when to activate this or not.
