In a serious note I am now building my 5th track car (vrs) and you really need to listen to what is being said as there are alot of people on here that will help you,Good luck in what ever way you decide to take this but really I hate to inform you U know nothing about VAG engines at all nor have no communication skills online???? You will fook up your car dude maybe not now but in a short time, and you will screw up your fueling as well as the ecu will miss read the air coming in and not to mention spending £40 on a MAF every few days, We are only trying to help you,you are taking some stick cause of your attitude towards other members....:thumbdown: Not a good thing to do as no doubt you will need advice one day. :D

It's not that bad :giggle:

Maybe if adding a bit more of distance with an Aluminum* pipe, lets said 5 inchs fron MAF, a heat shield working also as supporting bracket, and it will work much better

since this thread has gone to ****e i might just high jack it for 2 mins. :giggle: got a carbonio fitted and wanna feed a pipe from lower grille to filter which is currently sat near/under the battery. clive i have read that you have done this on a few occassions, what should i use to hold it in place just a few zip ties? and also do you keep the honeycomb grille or cut it out in the shape of the piping? just scared something will get sucked up in there ie leaves and other rubbish

ideas and comments welcome

I drilled out my vent, but my feed goes directly into the standard air box. Any crap that goes up the pipe will be caught by the filter :D

Do yourself a favour, stick this on, would be worth getting a larger filter too, but this would certainly be much, much better!!!

Either that or leave it standard.

Steve

Hey Stevie, that link you posted for the cold air kit looks tempting!!! would there be much benefit to the engine fitting a kit like that, i was gonna go for a k&n Panel filter replacement but its about the same money as the ebay kit! id have her bought if i thought it would be a good job lol, bit harder to hide from the insurance accessor lol

The panel filter and the std airbox would be better, as I said earlier theer was a test done years ago which proved this to be better, although I'm not sure which cone set up was used, don't know if it was a bumper job or one which sits in the engine bay.

I bought my kit in 2005 on ebay for £80 delivered, it's been brilliant. never had any problems what so ever with it.

as all the guys have said, these engines suffer from heat soak, to the point that whilst on the nurburg last year my ecu retarted the timing due to heat soak and my air filters not even in the engine bay!!

theres not a single thing you can't find out on this forum from someone who's "been there, done that" eat humble pie and learn from others mistakes. in 6 months time you'll be one of those guys telling a newbie he's being foolish!!!

Thanks to all those who have taken time to share their experience and knowledge here.

Never heard of "heat soak" before so I have learnt something new, as I said the filter was done in a rush without much thought. To be vastly improved....

I welcome constructive criticism, which is what I would like to think I'd get especially from experienced technicians and Members with 50,00000 posts.

What's really unhelpful are comments like "chav" or "looks pants" so please instead of seeing who can be the most sarcastic let's stick to what the Forum should be about - help and advice and passing on experience.

Apologies for my lack of knowledge, please don't shoot me down just gently guide me. Thank you

 you did ask for opinions on it though :giggle:

Be warned this forum can empty your wallet very quickly. My car was supposed to be a family run around, I'm now looking at sinking another £1k on my next round of mods

but it is chavy and looks pants and doesnt work and will loose you power did you want us to lie to you????

put you standard box back on looks better and actually works and wont cause premiture engine and turbo failure

I think if i recall that test was using a cone filter bolted directly to the MAF and not a CAI kit like ABD or other variant.

Although agree a std airbox with good filter and a good cold feed to the original entry of the airbox intake works well. I have tried numerous variants of the std airbox and CAI kit's and swapped back and fourth with them. Currently running my ABD CAI kit and find that works better for my set up and tune. Although it is a shame i did not get real test done to prove difference. But as mentioned the worst case is a open fiter bolted direct to the MAF, in terms of heat soak and ability to get a constant cool airflow through the air flow meter.

Hi there, heat soak in this case of context is used to describe the effects of hot air from the engine being pulled into the intake pipe through the filter/MAF. These VAG group engines run very hot and that heat needs to stay away from the intake side of the car. Hot air ruins turbo boost and thus the cars power. Keeping the charge temps down and intake temps going into the MAF make for better boost. I am sure someone will quote it better than me...

So your best bet is either maintain std air box or as i did fit a CAI(Cold air induction) kit that has a pipe with a filter on the end of it that take the filter down by the front bumper away from heat which is why they call these things CAI.

Here is a few pics of mine fitted to help show where it is fitted.

Headlight removed to show filter sitting behind bumper.

Also note I have a mesh front bumper grill to get the air into the filter. some folks vent there std grills.

hope this helps

I wonder if it would be worth insulating the intake pipe? Maybe use exhaust lagging?

Yep that would also help. I had it on mine to start with but it was all torn and hanging off.

Well after reading this post i have decided to get rid of my pipercross filter. It attatchs straight to my MAF so i am probbaly getting heat soak. I have decided to go for a CAI pipe and filter is the CAI pipe and filter louder than the standard airbox?

paul just put standard box on with uprated filter and 3 inch intake cost about £30 to do and works

Yes it will be louder than std airbox. Also louder if a none std DV is used.

+1

Performs a lot better than my old CAI!

My CAI works fine...

here we go again...... :D

Are you sure .............. :giggle:

Are you sure .............. :giggle:

Don't know....

Well i would put the standard air box on but i stupidly sold it to a mate :-(, so i have ordered a cold air intake pipe off ebay i am going to try incorporate my pipercross fillter to my new cai pipe ill hopefully be able to set in down in behind the bumper, ill post pics up if i manage something. Another quick point i have noticed that sometimes when i give it the beans it feels like my car is holding back ever so slightly could this have something to do with running a pipercross induction kit? I always wait untill the gauge is at 90c before i give it some could heat soak have something to do with it holding bac? Or am i talking complete *******s
