Potential Pot Hole Damage?

Featured Replies

Driving through town last night and I ran over what must've been one helluva pot hole as I felt a huge 'bang' 'bang' (followed by some choice expletives) as the front then rear wheel went over it on the driver's side. I didn't even see it as it was dark and raining so the hole must've been small in diameter but possibly very deep. What's more worrying is it was on the main road through town not some country road where this might be expected.

I pulled over about 100 yards up the road to inspect for potential damage but there's no marks on the rim, inside or out, it's not dented and there doesn't appear to be any ill-effects from hitting this pot hole.

I checked again in the daylight today but again there's no visible signs of damage and the car doesn't appear to been affected in any way.

Question is, is there anything else that I should look for and could there be any other damage that can't be seen?

As pot holes go, it's by far the nastiest one I've ever had the mis-fortune to drive into but I'm a little apprehensive about the fact that there's no visible damage yet there could be something I'm missing? Either that or Skodas are incredibly well-built these days!

IN my experiance the VRS's with the stiffned suspention and 40mm tyre depth makes you fell every bump, stone etc much worse. Also the lack of sound dead proofing makes it sound alot worse too.

Sounds like you've been lucky this time.

I won't argue with that, my heart sank when I felt those bumps. It was so violent I thought I must've instantly broken something but it seems not, without wanting to tempt fate.

Don't you just love 40 profiles Scott.

Checking your pressures over the next few days with the same gauge on the affected tyres will be your indicator of something amiss.

I bought a digital pressure gauge that I use on the car and bike on a weekly basis to keep an eye on their pressures.

I've hit a few nasties in my Golf which has 225/45 17" tyres and havent had any problems. VAG group cars are tougher than most in this respect. I wouldnt worry unless you get a tyre pressure alarm or the car exibits apparent tracking/steering allignment issues (pulling to left or right, wonky steering wheel on dead ahead).

With all the recent water I've noticed a few potholes as well but fortunately, I have to give them credit here, Wiltshire Council have sealed most of them fairly quickly :o

When I do go over one though, I sure as hell hear it more than I feel it. Not sure if I've been lucky or the noise just makes it sound worse than it is.

In the VRS when I hit any form of small hole or defect in the road, it is amplified a hundred times over with the 40 tyres and hard suspension.

One pot hole I did exactly the same as you, thought I might have destroyed something in the car the bang was that loud, turns out it was nothing.

Hi Scott, as the guys are saying...but also just watch the tyres that went into the pothole for the next few weeks for bumps, lumps and bulges. They may appear over time on the side walls (both outer and inner side walls). You cannot see what internal damage to tyre banding has resulted, if any. Hopefully, nothing will appear. I recently hit an almighty pothole on one of my big motorcycles...just couldn't see it. I check my tyres each day anyway as a motorcycle rider. But I have Ultraseal in my tyres which instantly seals a puncture of any kind whether caused through side wall damage or damage to the tread area. It works well in cars too. Had it in my Merc SL500 and it saved the day many times. We used it too in the military and they still do in certain combat vehicles. Can thoroughly recommend it, it's the same stuff fleet operaters use and is in all Royal Mail vehicle as an example.

I hit a pothole in my Greenline a few weeks back. Made one hell of a noise. I honestly thought I had run over a brick or something. As previously stated it sounds a lot worse than it is. I closely inspected the tyre and the wheel. No problems. Car still steered straight with the steering wheel in the exact same place. No wobble at speed so all good

I did damage a wheel on my 1.2 HTP Fabia. Hit a massive hole and it actually jolted the steering. car drove straight fine and no damage to the tyre. At speeds of over 55 the car had a low droning noise. Turns out one of the alloys was fractionally flattened. This caused the droning. Stuck it on the rear and all was fine.

To sum up. If the tyre appears ok, the car doesnt pull to one side. Steering wheel in same place and no wobble or noise at speed........your probably fine.

This is going to happen far more often due to the winter we have just gone through, plus the councils are stuffed no money to do a proper repair and when they just fill in the edge of the old tarmac breaks up quicker

I'm sure the pot-hole will be fine. Can't see it being too badly damaged by your wheel.....:giggle:

Best check the engine for signs of damage/leaks etc - Pot-hole destroyed my Daewoo Nubira on boxing day (and that's how I came in to the Skoda family).
