vRS TSI 53.5 mpg !

Featured Replies

Not sure I fully understand how the MFD fuel consumption calculation works. Today my Consumption 2 i.e. the long range average which is usually around 38 mpg was running at 53.5 mpg ! That is more like the best ever attainable fuel consumption rather than an average?

My MFD usually reports 2-3 mpg better consumption than I really get brim to brim.

Does go crazy sometimes. I notice this if I go a long, easy run just after filling the tank.

Best thing to do is complete a mixed route of driving if at all possible - 100 miles maybe, then brim the tank back up. Note the amount of fuel taken to brim it again and the mileage completed - then the 'fuzzy logic' of the MFD can be altered in VCDS

It is possible to get a pretty decent, accurate output from it, with a bit of tweaking.

Might be something like that, I had done 700 miles of steady 60 mph but I dont expect the real world consumption to go much above 40 mpg. Thanks.

I think even the car was bored . . .

Your compeuchter probably hit its 20 hour accounting maximum and automatically reset while you were poodling along at 54mpg.

Happened to me the other day. Suddenly went from 48mpg overall to 52mpg.B)

Don't even hot that in my diesel vrs and that's driven 85% on motorways!

Seen 570 miles on the range of our TSI VRS which indicates 48 mpg or so and that is just criusing mostly at 70 mph and then a few dozen miles through the motorway road works at 50/55 mph and it shows what can got eve without really trying. Current TSI VRS has CO2 of only 175 grams per kilometer ut they did not alter the quoted consumption from the older VRS which was 190 gm/km, odd? We have a TSI 1.8T DSG and that can show over 600 miles on the range. Even if up to 5% inaccurate it is pretty impressive and with the VAT deal then why buy a diesel? Diesel fuel is also now 6p a litre more than petrol!

600 miles on the range for a petrol........wow....my 58 plate tfsi vrs rarely shows a range of 420miles when filled up.

Doesn't mean that it'll actually manage it though :D

If we have been booting it round town, up and down the inner bypass, and when it had only 1 or 2K on the clock I have seen it show 295 miles on filling it up! The TSI is so clever and versatile it can give 7 second 0-60, 150+ mph and do 48 mpg on A roads (with few or no roundabout or junctions) ie thru Mid-Wales. Be gentle 48 mpg, be harsh 24 mpg.

Ohh it can as I have watched it thru a tankful and adding the range left to the mileage travelled on MFD Register 2.

The computer may well be 5% or so inaccurate, it runs on wheel rotation of course which vary 3 or 4% on tire pressure and tread depth of course. Pump up the tires and it can seem less economical. Cannot be bother to work it out on the routeplanner mileage and pump fill but it is within a 5% tolerance I reckon.

Well impressed with both the TSI VRS (SWIMBO has that I have used whilst my 1.8 TSI DSG came) and the 1.8 TSI, both use the EA888 engine and chuffed with both. Still have the Octy 1 wiesel estate just in case/when fuel goes to £2 a litre!

Oh look, it's the TSI spokesman ;)

The MFD can be far more than 5% inaccurate. Differs from car to car.

And of course you're referring to your favourite 1.8TSI, not the 2.0 unit of the OP.

No, no, we have both ie 2 litre and 1.8 TSI, and I have done more miles in the TSi VRS than I have in the 1.8 TSI DSG that I only got in November. Did around 12K in the TSI VRS and low 40s was quite the average on the long runs ie 150-200 miles ones I do. 1.8 TSI is more like mid 40s or high 40s if just cruising in the 60-70 mph zone (GPS). VRS is a manual one and 1.8T is 7 speed DSG and the 1.8 TSI is higher geared which helps the fuel consumption. Should dig out the receipts or fuel card logs as I think the usually show fuel consumption based on reported mileage. Must be about right as yesterday I went from worcester, via BHX airport to Great Yarmouth and back same way, which is some 450 miles and fuel light just came on when getting home which is 2 gallons left I seem to remember from the manual. Doing about 1K miles a week so be interesting to see if it levels off at the book figure of 43 to 52 mpg as the TSI VRS did at 10K-ish.

My brim to brim on this last trip was 44.9 mpg so that would mean the MFD was more than 10% out.

My brim to brim for the last tankful is 53.92mpg. My best ever and reflected in my recent compeuchter reading of ~54mpg on a trip back from Bromsgrove.

My memory2 has now reset itself after the usual 20 hours.

Not using cruise control seems to improve the mpg and allows me to lift off now and again to get 200mpg for a short while. Puzzling as to why the cruise can not do that itself?

On the cruise question, that's really because it can't see what type of gradient is coming up, whereas you can and lift off, then pick up speed on the other side of the gradient again. All that CC can do is maintain a set speed. And it attempts to do that no matter what.

I'm still a fan of it over longer distances and in temporary speed zones etc, and wouldn't be without it in a case. But I would generally never use on a particularly hilly route.
