ok thx

Thought it was just *less* than 2L Jase?

Either way, 2x 1L bottles will cover it :)

Or just buy the spare from Jase, as it really only needs doing every 60k or so

Seems to be a tad less, as 2 x 1L bottles resulted in some of the oil going down my sleeve. Ah well.

I use the same Millers oil that's in Big Jase's link. I tend to do it at every service, but only because I do the work myself and the bits are all there anyway.

What tools are needed for this.

when i used to go to santa pod a lot in my glanza, i always used redline im sure it was called shock proof or something, its brilliant! makes the changes super smooth and keeps those syncros in good condition! its not cheap but the power your running its going to be worth it id say! :)

not sure my mechanic did it...

but yes i have around 3 litres of millers here... good oil...

only opened around 6 months ago but my mechanic said it would keep for years

every service is a bit extreme :o

You're probably right, but I can get the right oil cheap enough, and it doesn't add much time onto my service. Helps having use of my neighbour's tools and two-post lift.

I can't really justify it but it's something I like to do.

My gearbox seams quite stiff to changes gear when it's cold. I am thinking that an oil change may help the problem.

So what stuff do I need? I'm sure I've read it has to be Fully synthetic. What viscosity should it be, 70W-75, 75W-80 or 75W-90 or something else?

75W-80

Post #4....

I'm sure I read somewhere a 70W-75 will do, but I must be wrong. I'll make sure a 75W-80 is used.

Am I right in saying a fully synthetic oil is recommended? I would normally buy the Millers stuff as I use it in the engine, however it looks like it is a mineral based oil. According to their website it's not even a semi-synthetic oil.

My annual service is due in a month so I'll get it changed then.

Good point about the synth question. I think that's what you need.

If you usually buy from Opie, then it's 2L of the Fuchs you need:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-981-fuchs-titan-sintofluid-sae-75w-80-synthetic-manual-transmission-fluid.aspx

That meets the VAG spec for 'box oil. If you're looking at other stuff just check to make sure it meets those. Might be referred to as the VAG 501 50 standard or simply VAG A1/A2.

HTH,

Steve

Just picked up 2L of gear from skoda and its 75-90.

Had the stiff gear change when cold in my previous Bora (6 speed O2M box), changed the oil at approx 110K used Fuchs, to see it if would alleviate this issue at all - and it didnt make the slightest difference to the changes at all.

As far as I understood the gearbox's on VW are sealed for life - why are people changing the oil every service??

Seems mad to me. Gearbox oil is the foulest smelling thing - the sulphur in it honks!!

if you know wher oil comes from and goes to, and the penalty for it, you DO have justification for doing it at a much wider interval

Just because it didn't cure that individual issue for you, doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered for anyone else!

While I wouldn't change it that regularly, I don't personally agree with VAG's 'sealed for life' comment. How can they guarantee, with ANY certainty, that the oil won't degrade past an acceptable level?

Personally speaking, mine was changed at 80k along with a new clutch and I'm very glad I did.

Because I can. It certainly won't do any harm.

Hence the reason I do it :)

I don't wish to sound ignorant or anything, but would you care to explain?

Thanks,

Andrew

well, if you do thing just because you can, doen´t that make you spoiled in a way? ; to put it in a Marvel quind of way, with great power, comes great responsability.

just don´t think of only yourself even if there is no noticeble penalty, do only what you must, i´ll only say that much, cus this is car talk, and if i start quoting a million thinks like the bible, marks, Iron maiden, the butterfly effect etc... is going to be long an not much of what whe like (our beautifull Skoda´s)

edit. i dont mean to sound bad (though after posting and reading it, i felt like i might come off wrong), just please think i´m very concious of the world and the effects (though minuscule) of what we do in others.
