Pro's and con's of taking the Sai off

Featured Replies

Just wanted to know what are the good and bad things to it and why you take it off . I'm thinking about doing this but want some more information about it .

Pro's, you don't get the annoying diesel pump noise on start up, you get more room in your engine bay to work on other things, it's not required so doesn't mess anything up come MOT time.

Con's, you may get a CEL light every couple of weeks so need to fit a resistor.

But it might give CEL even with resistor, if you dont map it off?

I would do this also but havent yet got confirmation for that CEL problem...

Even if you do get a CEL you can reset it and it won't come back for 2-3 weeks. I've got a cheap fault code reader so it's not an issue

It's not difficult to remove it from the map, any good tuner should be able to do it for a small cost..

It must be there for a reason :S

If it's noisy then chances are the rivets are starting to fail. I took mine out and replaced the rivets with nuts and bolts and it's much much quieter now.

I don't understand why it's removed if there only the reasons . The noise doesn't bother means it only lasts for 30 seconds or so .

Don't bother then

Is that the main reason why it's taken off because of the noise ? If it's not working then fair enough but it just sounds alot of hastle just for the CEL light to come on once a month or so

Its to satisfy laws in other countries, it works out cheaper to have all the cars to the same spec than individualising them to different Countries/States etc.

I took mine off along with 2 solanoid valves on front of inlet manifold, Ive got a cel light but car runs alot smoother now,

Not bothered about cel light as am going to get it mapped at some point anyway

It removes a lot of ****e. But if you are happy with it then leave it be.

I only had min removed as I had the N119 and N249 done at the same time.

As mentioned earlier it does create quite a bit more room around the front and side of the engine, plus creates a bit more space near the oil filter when you remove the pump itself.

If and when you need to replace lower breathers or other pipework at the front of the engine, it is much easier once the SAI, hoses, N249, etc are all removed.

Longer term i haven't read any issues with chaps who did this mod years ago in their Golfs, Skoda, Audi's, etc now having issues, so expect it to be a pretty safe mod.

You will get a CEL, but once you put in resistors it should be limited to an incorrect flow type error, which i have recently had mapped out. Not too comfortable having to keep resetting, as i understand that the ECU has to relearn again (but some other member may be able to clarify).

If you're happy with your car, don't do much DIY and have a SAI which works and is not too noisy, then the benefits are more limited.

Yes but car does keep going through a relearning exercise every time you reset it. I just prefer to leave light on and forget it.

Hi Kevin, I have REVO 2 map and told it can not be mapped out with REVO.?? :(

I took mine off along with 2 solanoid valves on front of inlet manifold, Ive got a cel light but car runs alot smoother now,

Not bothered about cel light as am going to get it mapped at some point anyway

Only gamble with that philosophy is that if there is another problem you wont know about it.

+1 for the cheap fault code reader to carry in the car.

I didn't mind the noise and there was nothing wrong with mine, I sold it to a member on here, but if it's not needed then better out than in :)

Bowders, I don't think Revo maps can be modified. I know APR used to be like that, and APR bought Revo (or the other way round).

Kevin @ Jabba may be able to confirm that though.

It sounds like its there to preserve the cat as well as emissions.

Secondary Air System Theory of Operation

The purpose of the system is to help warm up the catalyst on a cold start. We accomplish this by pumping extra air into the exhaust passages of the engine, and by making the fuel metering extra rich, the unburned fuel and fresh air combine and burn in front of the catalyst. This brings the catalyst to operating temperature faster, thus it enables a quicker closed loop operation.

Mine runs no different with it removed, just a noisy piece of junk that gets in the way. If your planning on running a sports/de cat you won't need it anyway

Its not really removing unless its not working or your running a sports/de-cat . Only reason i was thinking about removing it as sometimes when i start the car up with this running it runs like pooh . Like when you set of to go it dumps without letting off and it feels like youve go a split pipe as its alittle jerky .

But after its turned off the car runs spot on .

probably worth cleaning the throttle body, the sai shouldn't really effect running.

Removing the SAI should not be really done to fix a ongoing problem on your car as it won't do that unless it is the SAI playing up. i.e running noisy.(rivets or mountings gone)

I removed mine purely to tidy up engine bay as i was also removing N112 and N249 and simplifying breather pipe work.

thread found here.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/155472-sai-n249-and-n112-removal/

Most of us folks if not all of us that have done the removal, have not found or seen any adverse effects or issues after apart from a Cell light coming up and it is potentially the N249 and N112 that gives smoother running as it converts the DV operation from electrical to mechanical.

But as mentioned fix the intial issue first.

possibly TB clean or temp sensor.(that can cause iffy starting and poor running till warm)
