What to mod first?

Featured Replies

OK Folks, as the car has been in my posession for a little over 24 hours, I need to start modding now. Whats the first port of call would anyone recommend?

Im holding off on a remap for now as that and the exhaust will be done at the same time I reckon.

ta very muchly.. :)

I've decided I don't like my Milotec rear blend. So that could be your first mod :smirk: It's even colour coded ready for you!

My first mod was this and IMHO the way the car should have looked leaving the factory

Are we a petrol or a diesel? Sorry, must have missed that over in the 'Phaeton gone' thread...

I'd do the grille colour code properly, as a starter.

Depends what exactly you think you're modding will consist of? More cosmetic and personal tweaks? Or more mechanical? On the latter, some Eibachs and a rear ARB will reap some benefits.

Have fun!

Nice grill. Whats the procedure? Is it removed? Or painted in situ?

Wheel recolour before pdi.

I did the debadging, stubby aeriel and the Audi knob within the first days, eibachs a few days later, fiscon Bluetooth after a few weeks.

Coil overs, map, short shift at about 6 months.

I don't want a noisy car so exhaust is staying stock.

Why dont you like it and what would you want for it ?

Lighter wheels as I carry a full size spare on both the TSI VRS and the 1.8 TSI as cannot afford to be stuck 200, 300, 400 miles from home with only a 50 mph tyre but hate carry 25 kgs extra in the boot.

Perhaps a larger, heavier battery and washer water bottle to compensate for the Octavia weight imbalance ie 60/40 ruins acceleration in the damp and cold. (Crap OE 225/45-17 Bridgestone don't help and they will be going for PS3s soon.

the 60/40 balance is a front/rear balance, so why would you increase the weight, that makes it worse. To much squat at the rear (soft std springs) and crap tyres ruin acceleration

Are you sure about that (and that you've got it the right way round)? Surely an engine and gearbox will weigh more than an empty boot?

The other Golf platformed cars have less percentage weight on the rear wheel more on the front hence can potentially, tyres giving more grip and suspension preventing weight transfer aside, get more traction and power down on the front, it is the Octavia's Achilles heel.

Yes "Acceleration is Force/Mass" but sometimes adding at bit more mass in the right place ie on an Octavia on or forward of the front axle could aid acceleration particularly in cold and damp conditions ie Uk 90% of the time.

Hopefully I will get to Bruntingthorpe for the GTI meeting but I pressume most people, when they run up the strip, take out the spare wheel, empty the boot, remove parcel shelf, put all but the drver's seats forward ie transfer the most percentage weight as far foward as possible.

Consider the shame that the BMW 320 Eff Dynamics (160hp) is quicker over the 0-60 than a standard Diesel VRS and nearly as quick as a 1.8 TSI mainly because of the rear wheel drive advantage which we need to be very contious to work around to avoid humiliation.

Again one of the plus points of the DSGs is that they provide 20 kgs (7 speed) and 40 kgs (6 speed) extra over the front axle which can help traction. It is just getting the launch right which requires little clutch mechanical sympathy. My 1.9D has a massive 5.5 litre water bottle and seems to have a bigger battery which diesels often have and with all these factors it was better in the snow the Mark2 VRS and 1.8 TSI DSG we have.

You have some unique views I'll give you that!

Extra weight over the driven wheels will improve traction, you are correct.

If it was a redistribution of the current weight then that would almost certainly improve acceleration too.

However, since you want to add weight, how do you know that the extra weight wouldn't cancel out the acceleration benefits the extra traction brings?

And even if it did slightly improve acceleration, adding extra weight in the nose, and specifically ahead of the front axle, would blunt the turn-in and remove a lot of the feel from the steering, thus damaging the handling.

Surely it's more important to be quick over a twisty road (where it's fun) than off the lights?

And is lack of traction a problem in the Octavia anayway?

I get my new one on the 1st March and it's booked in at Awesome on the 2nd March for remap and suspension change. Considering a CAI too.

Which coilovers are you going for Jonno?

Having driven a standard manual CR vRS the only real let down for me was the brake set up - they were good for regular use but if you needed that extra bit of stopping power they tended to fade. The standard power and suspension set up seemed more than adequate. If you want true performance get a bike!

I think it is not great compared to rear wheel drive and cars like the SEAT CUPRA we had. It is not great and several things in our cars make it worse. As I said we carry full sized alloy spares, often lots of stuff in the huge boot etc. It is frustrating after being use to cars such as tuned Mk 2 Escorts, Rovers SD1s and Opel Mantas back in the eighties when loading the boot helped things not make it worse.

Agree that too much weight on or infront of the rear axle will mess up turn in. I find the ESP on the TSI Octy2 very good to keep things in shape even when pushing beyond 100%.

Ultimately it is a question of balance of all these facets and considering all the bang for buck is miles better than any with 4 wheels.

As someone else said if you want performance either spend £70K plus on a car or £7K on 2 wheels.

Trust you to change your knob early doors :dull:

I spend a lot of time touching my knob, so it has to be right.
