coding 12v socket to come on with engine

Featured Replies

Is this possible? Really want the sockets to come on when the acc or engine is on. Then I can leave charger or travel fridge etc plugged in during the day11

This won't be a coding issue, you need to find the ignition fed live terminal (behind the trim above the foot pedals on some VAG cars) and physically make the connection.

Don't forget that if you take the feed from the fusebox then you will need to fit an in-line fuse in.

I use a voltage protector you can get them from Halfords !!

Yeah definitely possible, for free, and not too hard, but slightly time consuming. There's a 20A fuse in the fuse box at the drivers side of the dashboard that supplies the 2 accessory sockets (and nothing else is on that circuit). You need to relocate the wire running into that location from behind - which means removing a fair bit of the dash trim to be able to access the back of the fusebox - and locate it in one of the empty locations with a switched positive feed pre-installed (these are the lower down fuse sockets, just look straight in from the front and you'll see the copper coloured positive feed strip, to make sure you're not installing in an unserviced location).

To remove the wire from it's original location, a small flat bladed screw driver inserted between the plastic edge of the socket and one of the "legs" while pulling the wire will dislocate the barb holding it in on that side, same for the other side and it'll pull free out the back. It just slides into the new location and clips itself in place.

I've not done this exact mod but i did add a new "repair wire" to my fusebox (and a new fuse) to power my satnav (semi-perm mounted in the car) & roadhawk camera, so i've been through the same motions and it wasn't too hard.

EDIT: in about 2 weeks i'll be doing the same in the new car, happy to put together step by step pics if it'll help. In fact i'll probs do that anyway, might help someone sometime :-)

Thanks for all the info, will look forward to the guide!:thumbup:

 I'd be interested in a guide too - I am keen to try and run a power socket to the top mounted cubby so that I can mount / run my sat nav from there.

Cheers.

Yes; definitely think a guide would be appreciated emoticon-0148-yes.gif

What have i signed myself up for :giggle: not to worry it was on the plan anyway
