Engine under tray

Featured Replies

I had my car serviced and I think they might have taken it off & not put it on again. Is this likely to cause any problems, or should I make a point that they replace it? (the garage is quite a bit out of my way & wouldn't be able to get there for a while)

If your sure they are responsible, I would insist that they sort it out for you, without you having to do a 80mile round trip. It is important to have it in place (aerodynamics and it keeps the engine bay clean and reasonably dry)

If they wanted to be awkward it might be difficult to prove it was there before the service.

It might well come down to their word against yours...

The outcome will likely depend on their attitude towards customer service!

Of course you should insist they replace the tray. The tray keeps quite a lot of muck out of the engine compartment and also dampens down engine noise . Also it improves the aerodynamics very slightly. The garage may be too embarrassed to admit that they forgot to re-fit it. Are you sure it was there when car was handed over ?

I would expect a decent garage to query the fact that the tray was missing when they handed the car over. .

Fairly sure, I dropped an allen key onto it a few weeks ago! I will ring them tomorrow and enquire... cheers guys :)

Would it be removed during a normal service?

If they are changing the oil then yes it would be removed to get access to the sump plug etc

Answer for your question... If you live in a country where it rains all the time than its wort replacing it because it can cause dampness in the wiring connections and also water can be splashed on to the engine causing engine to stop working. Try skoda it self plastic bits are not expensive.

YOU NEED AN UNDERTRAY BECAUSE....

On some VAG cars fitted with the 1.9 engine, the power steering pulley is low down and driving without an undertray exposes it to water from the wheels. Subsquently you can get temporary loss of power assisted steering when driving though a puddle, which if on a bend/roundabout is a very scary experience, I know cause I've experienced it. Most women would probably lose control as the steering becomes extremely heavy.

I know from other forums, that this has caused some serious accidents.

I had a similar experience at the end of last year.

My Vauxhall Astravan was in at a local dealer to get some warranty work done (one of the few times the warranty actually covered anything) and a couple of weeks later I was checking the oil etc and noticed the engine was all mud and cr4p. I checked underneath and the cover was gone. Called dealer who said the technician was "100% certain that he refitted it"

Went back to dealer who put it on the ramp then called me through about 15 mins later to say, there is no clips on this, its never had a cover. I know there was a cover there because I looked under the van after I bought it and thought it would be a pain in the rear to remove the cover to change the oil when the warranty had run out - also their technician was 100% certain he had refitted it

Also, I asked "how do you explain that then?" pointing to the large cover shaped (with nice straight bits and nicely curved edges) clean bit in the middle of the engine bay. Oh, we can't explain that but its never had a cover was the reply. It looked something like someone had put a cover shape on and sprayed round it with mud coloured paint then taken the cover away. To55ers.

Needless to say, I never got an undertray off them and will never deal with them again. The only plus point is that I can now get in easily to do all my own servicing (they were cr4p at that as well) so I know it is done right and I will get oil etc from elsewhere so they will never see the colour of my money again.

If you can prove that the cover was there, give them it tight because the covers keep your engine clean and they are expensive (approx £300 for the vauxhall one). Also, the cover is yours so they have stolen it.

Be aware, they will fob you off because thats what dealers do  .

Cheers

Dave
