Think i have broken the engine?

Featured Replies

the loss of power bit in the op statement would suggest heavily the turbo is seized

he will be a lucky chappy if this was the only failure but we can all hope

Also, does it have to be the k03s turbo? Are there any others that will directly fit or with slight modification eg k04?

k04 major ££££

you could go k03s hybrid but agian not a cheap conversion

imo i would get a second hand turbo and try that as at the moment you are not sure if the engine is good or not dont run before you can walk

UPDATE. Right i have changed the oil feed pipe and put fresh oil in it. Turned engine over a few time without coil packs on to circulate the oil a bit. Started the engine which was very noisy for about 10 seconds then it went nice and quiet. Put foot on gas and i get a high pitched squeal coming from turbo/engine? I turned it off straight away!

My question is should i run it at idle for a bit to see if the noise goes away?

Yes, let it tick over with no gas. You may have not let oil circulate enough. No gas whatsoever. Be patient. If you hear any unwanted noise on tickover turn off. Let oil circulate around engine and turbo until fully warmed up. If you get past this point safely then consider slowly increasing revs.

As you've been churning on the starter and obviously not using the car for a while, it could just be a heavy charging load on your alternator causing the belt to slip. They do screech.

Ok, started it and lots of smoke and squeal! Let it warm up on its own for about 15 mins the smoke and squeal goes.Soon as i slightly press the gas it smokes again and rattly/squeal comes back. I take it thats deffo the turbo is knackered and not the engine?

The engine sounds ok i think, so i hope its just the turbo

guess you'll have to change the turbo and find out, good luck.

Take the air pipes off to the turbo and see if you can turn it or if it is seized. If it still turns then the engine is probably knackered.

check for excessive movement in the turbo shaft- (try lifting the shaft end with a finger- ENGINE OFF!!) ive seen them snap in half in the past :o if all is well there should be no/ hardly any up and down/side to side movement in shaft.. and the turbine should rotate smoothly..

it dosnt take long at all for a turbo to destroy itself through oil starvation and high revs..

good luck

it will be seized as i have said already

It seemed you were getting ignored, so I was repeating your sentiments.... hopefully someone will listen this time

Well just bought a turbo off ebay for £100, seller rang me and said it was in good condition no cracks or play in it. Picking it up on tuesday, Anybody from wirral/chester area fancy helping fit a turbo lol! :S

Maybe sure your prime it with oil during fitting (ie. before you attach the oil feed pipe), so it has oil from the moment it starts to spin.
