Is Jeremy right 0-60mph in 8.7sec

Featured Replies

I watched top gear last night(a repeat)

And was very surprised when top gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson quoted a 0-60mpg figure for a Yeti 1.8 petrol at 8.7seconds

Now until this weekend i was fairly oblivious to the Yeti, but then i drove one, and my word was it a pleasant surprise.

The one i drove one a diesel and although it was brisk enough i can't see this car being capable of 0-60mph in 8.7secs.

Other than that just wanted to say im very jealous of any Yeti owners, you have a fabulous car and should my car needs ever change(like i have kids a dog or a wife) then i wouldn't hesitate buying one of these.

One last thing, also thought people that go and buy a VW Tiguan now that this is on the market are mentally dead and lacking in imagination.

Im pretty sure the standard 0-60 quoted for the 1.8TSi was around the 8 sec mark, possibly 8.1 seconds from memory? As standard its pretty brisk and its only in sixth gear that the standard car doesnt shine imo. Mines probably doing the dash to 60 in around 6.5 - 7 at a guess. Its certainly quicker off the line than a friends highish mileage Mk5 Golf GTi and even managed to leave an edition 30 but that was on a damp road where the four wheel drive will give the Yeti the advantage.

Having said all that, Ive never really been to concerned with the 0-60 figures. How a car pulls in the mid range is far more important to me in real world driving situations.

Hi All,

Those of you who missed these episodes, you can catch them on youtube on the links below:

To be taken on a lighter note as some of the comments Jeremy has made are hilarious and it's really difficult to tell whether he seriously means them or it just pulling our leg! The part where he holds the ice cream cone in the burning building and the helicopter landing on the roof are not to be missed!

Enjoy!

8.7 seconds is the official 0-60 figure quoted for the 2.0 ltr 170 bhp diesel. Not sure whether it's the same for any other engines.

My nice glossy and 'take it with a pinch of salt' SUK 2011 brochure states the following;

1.8TSI 4x4

0-62mph 8.4s

124mph max speed

2.0TDI CR 170 4x4

0-62mph 8.4s

125mph max speed

Oh somewhere in the distance behind the above, a Pedestrian Monster (as on order by TP)

2.0TDI CR 110 4x4

0-62mph 12.2s

108mph max speed

TP

When I first test drove my Yeti, I was surprised by how nippy it was off the line, and in the mid range; much quicker than I was expecting.

I'm not sure why I was so surprised, if you look at the stats on power and torque: 170bhp and 350nm for the CR170 TDI is pretty impressive and shows how far turbo diesel technology has come in recent years.

10 years ago I owned a Golf VR6, and that was a very quick car for it's day. But compare the figures: 2.8 litre V6 petrol, giving just 174bhp and 234 nm. The Golf boasted 7.1 seconds 0-60 and 137mph top speed.

Even allowing for the fact that 4X4 cars are notoriously difficult to get 'off the line' quickly, and the aerodynamics of the Yeti are worse than the Golf (and that this will affect the top speed), Skoda's quoted figures of 8.4secs 0-60 and 125mph top speed for my version seem entirely plausible.

I have to say that I've given more than a few boy racers a bit of a surprise at the 'traffic lights grand prix' in recent weeks.

the 1.8tsi....... im saying this again, guess nobody heard me the first time!.

the 1.8tsi is a destroked 2.0tsi, turbo is slightly smaller than the ones fitted to the GTI's and other 200bhp 2.0tsi engines, but not by much as a remap gets you around 220bhp (from 160!).

The 4wd system is identical to those fitted to the R32 and the newer golf R.

So you do the math..........

Yes indeed, Clarkson is great and I would vote for him if he ran from Primeminister.

Wasn't he running a 1.8TSI for his review. Evo Magazine have been running one longterm and it has put in some impressive times on the West circuit and isn't the claimed 0-60mph 8.4 seconds for it.

Yes. Looks like the official times from Skoda are 8.4 secs but most seem to say 8.1 on the net.

Hmmm, stroke it back up to the 2 litre mark with a remap and it could be the ultimate sleeper! :giggle::oB)

Yes indeed mate, the 1.8TSi is the way to go. Are the Skoda times 0-100km/h so 0-62mph? They really could be a great sleeper, especially in a slightly lower spec without all the additional weight of electric seats etc etc

Ahh, that could well be the reason behind the slightly differing times!

I ran mine mine for two weeks without the back seats in place and the spare wheel removed and it was noticeably quicker - response to the throttle once on the move was without doubt punchier (and its not bad standard, let alone Shark mapped)! B)

A nice stripped out one in white... thicker arb's, 345mm vag brakes.... oh, bring on the flaming from the mod haters! :D;)

We dont get the 1.8tsi over here :(

I would sell my left nut for one!.

Wonder how easy it would be to swap the 1.2tsi for the 1.8tsi, tons of those 1.8 engines lying about in wrecked VAG cars for pennys.....

Pretty expensive by the time the ancillaries and looms have all been swapped and having the 1.8TSi with just the traction ability of a front wheel drive chassis would defeat the object to a large degree tbh.

........is it worth more than your right? :giggle:

Why you interested?!

Welcome Sonner, you know what to do about that situation don't you :giggle:

Are you suggesting that me (a 22yr old male) should trade in my Porsche 944 S2 track day car, my MR2 roadster sports cars and muy little Felly.

Find a women to marry, have kids and get a dog to justify me owning a Yeti,

Now it's a great car but not that Great!

Does anyone believe anything Clarkson says?

Yes, he said the Yeti is a good car. Don't you agree? :D
