Glow plug warning for brakes out? Awesome!

Featured Replies

On my way to work, 'take to workshop' warning flashes as does the glow plug light.

Get to work, leave engine running, sort a couple of things out and then home to dump the Fab and pick up the Octavia so I can continue with site meetings.

Once home (ten mins ago) I ring Awesome for advice as I bought the Fab from a Citroen dealer! Amongst the advice they gave me was to check my brake lights as a fault on them could trigger the glow plug fault

Quick check of the brakes lights and they are both out. Not sure if it's both bulbs, the fuses or the wiring that's faultybut can't check just now.

Thanks to the chap at Awesome, I rang them because I had good servicing experience with them recently with my Octy, good job and good advice.

I'll try and sort this out over the weekend, any other advice or hints would be appreciated. The Fab 3 is an 08reg, 1.4td, with just shy of 40,000 on the clock

Yes, I've had this before. So does the mk2 fab not have the bulb failure warning light? My mk1 did but the cordoba I have now doesn't. Instead the glow plug light flashes. This can also be caused by a faulty brake pedal switch, but seeing as you've already found the bulbs have gone you're probably going to be alright. It's funny how it only does it when BOTH main brake lights have blown, you'd think just one bulb going would be enough to set it off. I thought I had a problem when both had blown, but the centre one was still working, so new bulbs were all that was required.

this will be the switch on the pedal that's out. If you do this yourself the genuine part is reasonably cheap but fitting it requires some care.

Thanks for the quick response PoloGaz & 2SkodaFamily, I was already whizzing back to work in the 2 mins it took you to reply. Just got home and rechecked the brake lights again and they are both out but the high central one works , so I presume it is just the bulbs.

I've checked the handbook and can't find any waning symbol for the brake lights being out, so maybe it's as simple as the bulbs being out rather than a system fault with the glow plugs.

Thanks again

I had this on my Fabia VRS, it was the brake pedal switch that had gone - no brake lights at all. That was great fun driving home from work - 90 miles from West London to Wiltshire!! (The switch chose to go just as I had arrived at work that morning!)

The glow plug light comes up as there is a fault logged in the engine ecu as it monitors the brake light circuit.

So you chose to continue your journey, fully aware that had you had to perform a rather rapid stop, a following vehicle could easily have customised both the rear of your and the front of thier car? :o

Bloody negligence, that is! I bet you would have tried to blame the other driver, for driving too close, despite the fact that they would have no warning of you stopping!

The law states you should not drive a vehicle with ANY bulb not functioning properly, with the sole exception of driving TO the nearest garage, where you can obtain a replacement bulb. In doing this, hand signals should then be used as backup.

(I bet I'll get a few hand signals now, for this comment)!

In my case a new engine after 2000 miles and now another 8000 awaiting a new No1 injector, both flashing glow plug lights on the dash.
