Oops! - Never Assume

Was having a rummage around my VRs the other day looking at potential routes to run cables for my Sat Nav (TV aerial) from the rear of the car to the front. Lifted up the boot floor and lifted out the polystyrene holder for the compressor etc.

I (foolishly) didn't order a spare wheel.

However what I hadn't realised as if you don't order a spare wheel you don't get a jack either?!?

I have been reading the various threads on fitting mudflaps and how much easier it is to do with the wheels off - without a jack I can't take the wheels off to get access? :swear:

Worth bearing in mind for anyone thinking of NOT getting the spare wheel as you seemingly don't get a jack either!

That's correct cost me £80 for the wheel and £40 for the jack wheel brace and some other bits WITH A foam bit that goes inside the wheel for the jack.at least you get full size wheel.bill

I did the same, paid £130 last week from the dealer for the whole lot, wheel and the tools.

Think about it logically .... what do you need a jack or wheel brace for anyway? you have got nothing to put on in place of the punctured tyre :giggle:

This is why it is a no brainer to order the spare wheel (c/w FOC toolkit) when you order the car, as it costs a lot more to retro order the bits from the dealers later on.

I ordered mine with the car as well. I wouldnt be without it due to the miles I do.

I wouldnt want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a punture and just a can of junk.

I take it when you order the spare wheel as an extra you get the tools and jack as well???????? :o

Yes you do for the far 'easier to swallow' £55 for the lot including wheel

Struggle to understand why anyone wouldn't order a spare unless they didn't notice they weren't getting one. The only times I've needed to change a tyre on mine I've been miles from the nearest garage and wouldn't have wanted to put my faith in a can of gu.

I suspect that's probably one of the main reasons why as few people I've spoken to were aware many cars now don't come with spare wheels and wouldn't have checked when buying a car as it's understandably something you'd expect the car to have.

Another (possibly dumb) question. If you order the spare wheel does it come with tyre.

I actually negotiated a spare into the deal but they forgot to put it in the car on delivery. I'll probably swing by and pick it up this weekend but it never occured to me that there'd be no jack or brace! One to confirm I think. I've got proper tools at home but I don't want to cart a trolley jack and breaker bar around all the time.

The toolkit jack would be a last resort, i reckon it does nothing for the paint on the reinforced jacking points :-(

Trolley jack (£15 from lidl or something now i think?) and an offcut of wood, hockey puck or something like that to avoid metal / metal contact

I've had 2 occasions in the last 2 months where I have had to use the spare wheel. Glad I ordered it, even though I have reorganised the boot and the wheel stands upright tied to a cross bar and got rid of the false floor....

I read somewhere (probably on here) that manufacturers don't do spares anymore because people simply don't use them! They reckon you have a puncture once every 9 years so it isn't worth the extra weight in your car.

....Well in the last 9 months of ownership i have had to use the spare 3 times, 2 of which resulted in new tyres (one of which had a hole in the sidewall so what would a tin of gunk done for that?)....SWMBO has had to use the spare 5 times in the last 9 months resulting in 4 new tyres!

So don't know where they get their facts from! I am on 1st name terms with the tyre shop owner now!

Just sounds like they're trying to justify their choice of a lack of spare tyre, on one of my cars I ended up with different punctures over time but even that aside even if I only rarely need to use the spare I'd rather still have it. Thankfully the first owner of my Octavia chose a proper spare (rather than the spacesaver I think was standard) otherwise it's something I would have been buying myself.

You can buy a scissor jack from machine mart for £9.97. A torque wrench is £19.99. Try and source a spare wheel off eBay and you should be able to come in under £60 the lot.

I also order without spare wheel. Later I had a punctured tire and the foam did not help me. I had to call help. Fortunately for me the seller cover all costs and they supplied me with normal spare wheel for free .

Anyone who has had a puncture with kids in the car would always order one, anyone who hasn't wouldn't as they have no idea just how bad it is.

For £55 it's a no brainer although it should be free on safety grounds.

Good point, Who's up for starting a 'reinstate the spare wheel' campaign

If it's anything like the one supplied with the Fabia (assume it is), then it just looks like a recipe for bending of metal, or scratching of paint. :( Which is why mine's got a bit of card (loo roll tube) wrapped around the contours of the jack head, to prevent metal/metal contact. :)

LOL...If you dont have a spare wheel, whats the use of the factory fit jack?

You should only use the standard supplied car jack for road side emergencys (such as changing a flat) and maintenance should never be carried out using one of those jacks, hence why they didnt supply one with the car.

I always have a jack at hand to remove the wheel and clean it properly, as well as the wheel arches with APC

*national lottery voice* that's a gooood ideeeea Martin

Duly pinched :giggle: I like it

They omit them so the car has a lower co band for company car drivers

TBH the standard jack is dodgy anyway...I've had it collapse twice whilst getting axle stands underneath. Thankfully both times I was quick enough to get something jammed underneath to stop it falling. :S

Ironically I bought the axle stands to fit a WALK to the car as the jack wouldn't have been safe

I now carry a small trolley jack in the boot and haven't noticed any performance or mpg loss :smirk:
