Insurance again

Featured Replies

Not Yeti specific, but this may be of interest. When I bought my Octy Scout in 2008 I succumbed to purchasing GAP insurance as part of the deal: it cost me £299 for £15,000 cover for 3 years, non-transferable and UK only. Before I went to the dealer yesterday to sort out the paperwork for collecting my Yeti next Tuesday, I thought I'd investigate other sources of GAP insurance and by doing a Google search and a visit to a comparison site came up with the same cover but with the added attractions of transferability should I change my car in less than three years, and also valid for up to 90 days in any one year on mainland Europe - and all this for just £199! Sure enough, my dealer offered me GAP through Skoda insurance, but for the same amount and length of cover (without transferability or European validity) it wouuld now have cost £399! Needless to say, when I told him what I had already found, he did not try to prolong the conversation.

Aye - it's another salesman's/dealers 'perk' - like Autoglym/Supaguard - £10 of materials*, a hour of labour etc., etc.,

* Check on Ebay if you don't believe me!

Cynic? Moi?

Well yes, actually

we did exactly the same when we bought a seat ibiza in 2005.

the dealer was quoting £300 for £11k value over 3 years with uk only cover (with lloyds).

an online search got that down to just £125 with the 90 days/year european thrown in.

the dealer matched it and threw in a set of mats too.

if you don't ask you don't get :smirk:

Well yes, if you consider that there is any chance of your car being a write-off. If you accept that you lose several thousand pounds in the value of the car the moment you drive it off the dealer's forecourt, and then of course steady depreciation thereafter, then that reduced value is all you would get from your insurance company if you write it off at any time. GAP insurance makes up the shortfall betweeen what your insurer will pay out and the invoiced price of the car. There is a dearer version of GAP that will make up the insurance payout to the actual price of a brand new car (ie allowing for any price increases in the meantime) but that can cost up to twice as much as the RIP (ie retail invoice price) GAP, and I reckon is probably not worth it.

Don't forget, most insurance companies will replace a written off car bought new during the first year of ownership on their comprehensive policies with another new one. Sort of makes GAP insurance redundant during year one.

My Gap Policy allows me to defer start until after year one

Also, isn't it possible that the second-hand value of a newly written off Yeti is more than it cost new?

Hi Merlinman

Out of interest where did you buy your gap insurance from? if you don't mind me asking. I've not bought mine yet. The dealer constantly phoned me for the first two weeks - and when I said I'd some research on the internet and could get it cheaper, he then tried to tell me that it would be no good. I've looked at directgap insurance and was debating about buying it from there. I didn't bother with my last car - but a friend's father recently "lost" a fortune when his car got written off in a fairly slow speed accident.
