Diff Whine

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Could all you late VRS owners do a little test for me please?

I have noticed a slight whine from my diff on overrun, starting at about 25mph, and fading at about 10mph. I'm not sure if this is normal, as the car may have semi-helical gears to stand the torque over the expected 150,000+ miles of the engine?

This could just be me being fussy, but I would like to know if, potentially, there is a problem there.

Regards

I hear a whining noise but strangely enough only when the wife is sat in the passenger seat?

You'll find that's not the diff though - that's the diff-erence

Was this outside a church? More likely that you'll hear the diffwhine there.

Can't say I have heard a whine from the diff, but I have got a rumble starting on full right lock from the left front. Also occasionally knocks. Think it may be the start of a CV problem. :(

Mines done it from day one.

Happens when in forth around the 30mph mark.

I'm not really bothered about it!

Had it on my furby from new, what sounded like diff whine at low speeds.

Ive heard it mentioned on here before so pretty sure its normal.Get dealer to take a look just to be safe.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I thought I may just be a little fussy. I have built a few gearboxes and diffs in my time, and none of them have whined.

Thanks for the suggestion about taking the car to the dealer, but to be honest, I wouldn't trust a dealer to change my wiper blades, let alone have them strip my box!! Which is why I asked the question really, with the car about 10 days old, i could demand a replacement rather than let them repair it. I'm not over impressed at the moment with the dealer.

1. Stickers on Hatch and Windscreen for their advertising benefit..not even put on straight.

2. Picked the car up in the rain, when it dried, it looked like someone had applied polish, and not rubbed it off.

3. Grease on the windscreen, so bad I had to use solvent to remove it.

4. AND...waiting for an hour and a half while they got my car registered!!! After I phoned them the day before, to be told, yes Mr Frampton, you're car is all prepared and ready to go. To add insult to injury, as I was about to leave, the dealer grabbed the keys so he could put some fuel in it..They even forgot the Fuel!!!!!

Whooooo!!!!...Thats better!!!!

I'm not over impressed at the moment with the dealer.

Which dealer is this?

I'd rather not name them for legal reasons, but lets just say they're based in Cardiff. I think they're the only Skoda dealer in that area.

Tell the importer how crap they are.

Tell the importer how crap they are.

They're actually a genuine Skoda main agent!!

Exactly. There is no excuse for poor PDI and handover, the importer has standards. Did they give you the PDI checklist?

What check list?????

Really it's their loss, I defenitley wont ever go there again. If they treat me like that when I spend

All the new cars I've ever had, have always had a completed PDI checklist. This is a list of items that the dealer should have checked, and ticked off, prior to handing over the car to you. It contains items such as Oil Level Check, Tyre Pressure Check, Windscreen Wiper Operation, Squeaks and Rattles, General Cleanliness, etc, etc, etc. He should tick these items off as part of his preparation to ensure a complete and satisfactory handover. I guess some dealers just can't be bothered.

My vRS had a very noisy diff whine when it was new. Now it has 2700 miles it's much quieter, though not silent. I think the gears are still bedding in. I wonder whether it would be wise to have the gear oil changed after say 10,000 miles as there may be some debris from the gears if they were meshing too tightly?

I also wouldn't want a dealer to strip the gearbox down. No disrespect to the technicians... it's just that the less a car is messed around with the better in my opinion.

my machine has done this since new as well - mentioned it some time back. After 7000+ miles its still there but less noticeable (might just be that I'm used to it). I mentioned it to the dealer and they said some do it, same as others, happy to live with it rather than have the 'box out and to bits (no disrespect to the technicians).

Nearly 2000 miles now, and still whining away!!

Also, I'd like to add that the brilliant Dealer I was talking about earlier in this thread managed to supply me the car with a little extra for free...45 psi in each tyre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....No wonder I thought the Michelins were noisey!!!!

Great Eh???????????

My car was delivered with the pressures way too high. Apparently they are pumped up really hard for travelling on a transporter. They should have been dropped to normal by the dealer, of course.

My Michelins are noisy even at the proper pressure!

I've covered 3600 miles now. like yourselves, the diff whine is still there but it only seems noticable at really low speeds when backing off the accelerator.

More worrying is the loud scraping sound from the drivers side back brake, my dealer says nothing's wrong but it certainly isn't right either!!!

Michelin Primitives still noisy too, the whole car makes a right din but I still love it

South West/South Wales Dealer.

I would recommend Williams Skoda in Bristol.

ive noticed this whining noise on my new vrs on the overrun between 30 and 40 mph. dealer is changing the wheel bearings at the mo so will wait to see how it goes. Cant say im impressed !

Captiol Skoda in Newport seem to be ok from my dealings with them so far.

Going back to the whine issue, my 05 vRS also complains a bit in fourth gear between 30 and 40 mph. Dealer said it was 'normal', but I'm keeping my eye (ear?) on it. having said that I've never driven a car that offers more smiles per mile, and the fuel consumption after my honda (the great swigger of fossil fuel), well, every day is like Christmas!!

Now that my vRS has done 10,000 miles I barely notice the diff whine. The brakes quietened down all by themselves too. Tyres are still noisy and many buzzes and rattles have immerged from the interior trim over the past year. The Fabia isn't as good as my previous Mk4 Golf for quality IMHO.

Still love it though!
