Am I correct in assuming that an automatic, like autos of old, wouldn't have a dual mass flywheel and clutch, but rather a much lighter effort for starting the car and a torque converter?

Yes you are ,Also you do have to notify dvla as it is a different lic.for auto cars.if you have a manual lic. you can drive either,so that car will be classed as a auto...
