dsg advice

Featured Replies

Hi chaps,

Can a dsg (6sp) box be shifted safely from sport (only uses first 5 gears) to drive / or vice versa whilst travelling? I know it can be moved between D & +/- but the manual does'nt mention D to S or more likely S to D. Only had it five days, don't want to blow it up, lol.

keep up the good work.

Cheers.

I regularly shift between D and S and have had no problems

You can switch whenever you like with no problems - Sport does use 6th gear but it just changes up later

Question answered. Many thanks. Just going on what the manual says about no 6th in sport mode "because it reaches top speed in 5th". no worries.

Yes it will if you bury the accelerator....Ease off though when up to say 70 and it will slide into 6th.

Can pretty much do what you want with the box....S, D, M, override with paddles when you want..

Having moved from many years with a manual box to DSG, I can understand the concern. But essentially, although you are moving what appears to be a gearstick, all you are really doing in this case is telling the ECU (computer) to behave differently. Its the ECU that is in control.

When you shift D => S you need to press the release button on the shift but going S => D just push the lever - no button needed.

Another useful change, while running, is from "D" to "N" (for some seconds of course and then back to "D") and this to avoid stresses to the gearbox when passing over destroyed parts of the road, full of pits and bumps, you know. Here in Greece the condition of the roads, especially city streets, is completely dissapointing, so I find myself very often changing from D to N and back to D and this gives me some peace of mind.

The manual says you only have to wait for the engine to rev down before re-selecting D. When you re-select D the appropriate gear is just waiting and if you don't depress the throttle pedal immediately you feel the clutch engaging smoothly after a second or so. If you depress sharply, the engagement is a bit jerky.

Indeed, just go for Park when you are still rolling as it locks up the box completely and that is fun. Do not think it does much when you go through Reverse whilst still moving forward think it only actually mecanically engages reverse when speed is zero or forward speed almost zero ie 1 or 2 mph. Older Autoboxes would let reverse be selected at 50 or 60 mph and apply it immediately, interesting when you are foot to the floor going from "2" to Drive and accidently go through Neutral in to Reverse, thankfully that does not seem to be able to happen but Park when moving slowly does, fun (7 speed but probably same as 6).

......Fun? I would not call going into Park 'fun' unless you fancy a very large bill for a new diff as the gearbox is mechanically locked via the diff as far as I know when park is selected....doing this whilst still moving is akin to stopping a bike by putting a stick in the spokes..it will work but it will wreck the wheel :o

Indeed, nice way to wreck the entire transmission and when the dealer sees the bent parking pawl, you'll end up having to pickup the multi thousand pound repair bill yourself. There is a reason why the manual says that P should only be selected whilst stationary.

Which is why I always snick to neutral.

Then cant get the key outta the ignition, by which time my right foot is 1/2 way out the door, which means I take time refinding the brake, in order to select Park to remove the key.

A very silly design element.

Quite annoying at the begining, I agree, especially when your hands are already holding your jacket and bag, but in time you get used to it and never forget. Besides, it's a major safety element. The system makes you put it in a multiply safe condition in order to allow you draw the key and leave the car. What if you haven't drawn the handbrake fully? The "P" position is an additional "brake" and besides no one can move the car because the key has to be reinserted for the selector to move away from "P".
