Passenger side dash squeaking

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm sure this has been discussed previously but i can't find anything.

I've had my 56 plate Octy VRS for 2 months. There's an annoying squeak (no its not the wife!) coming from the passenger side dash. I took the end cover off and shoved some sponge in some nooks and cranny's but the squeak is still there.

Is this a common issue and what can i do to solve it? Someone siad that it could something to do with the air vent but i cant get to it through the end (it seems to go up and back towards the engine). Its the only squeak/rattle the car has but its doing my head in. What can i do to get rid of it?

Hi. Best i can think of is drive with (non annoying) passenger and get them to pinpoint squeak. then you can decide best solution. You might be lucky to cure it by chance, then again maybe not, but good luck anyway.

Have you drove with the glovebox open, does it make the same noise??

Yes, i've put some foam pads in which means that the glovebox no longer makes a noise. It's definately not that but it was my first port of call! But thanks anyway

Picked up my vRS on Tuesday and I noticed a similar squeek/creak coming from the passenger side. Thought it might be the glove box so I opened it and the noise was still there. Poked about at various other bits and pieces until I discovered another little cubby hole under the passenger seat. Opened that and closed it and the SQUEEK STOPPED! Well, for the time being anyway. Its probably worth a look.

Ah yes the storage box under the seat. I'll give it a try but more in hope than belief that that is where the squeak is coming from!

Squeaks are really good on making pranks, never know where they are coming from ( especially if no one is sitting beside) :giggle:

I have now identified the source of the squeek. It is indeed the glovebox and not the under seat storage as i thought. If I apply pressure to the top right hand corner of the glove box door, the squeek stops. Looking inside reveals a little rubber "rest" that the door should push up too, adjacent to one of the two catches. I can't see any method of adjustment. Anyone got any suggestions?

I had a squeak on the ledge where the parcel shelf sits. I cut some small pieces of black draught excluder (foam with sticky back) on the ledge and that stopped it as the parcel shelf now rests on the foam not plastic. If you can do the same when the glovebox is closed the gap should be taken up by the foam. The roll of draught excluder was cheap to buy from B & Q and if it doesn't work you wont have wasted much cash.

I can COMPLETELY relate to this thread. I now too have a small rattle somewhere on the passenger side dash or front passenger door and I want to smash the **** out of the dash with a hammer, such is my annoyance at the sound it's making. But then I have zero patience, especially after spending over 18K on the car + the modifications recently.

I am going to take the wife out for a drive shortly and see if I/we/she can figure out where the sound is coming from.

It's not really like a rattle, it's more like a constant crinkle noise, like a leaf or a packet of crisps is stuck somewhere that air passes by. Doesn't do it when stopped but starts as soon as you move off.

My car is now making exactly the same noise. I've taken the side panel od the dash off and the noise still happens. I've narrowed it down to the plastic crossmember underneath the side panel that seems to hold the dash, glovebox and all the other parts together. It's driving me insane and I'm close to the same frustration as oobster!

Hi mate, your aware that I am the new owner of your old car?

Took the Mrs out for a wee drive on Friday evening, and she managed to narrow it down (or make it go away at least) by pressing down on the top of the dash right at the point where it meets the bottom of the plastic a-pillar cover on the passenger side. Took the side cover off the dash (it was dark by this time) and couldn't really see anything, but had a root around inside with my hand.

Fairly confident it was coincedence but I managed to locate, with the tips of my fingers, a bit of sticky label that was stuck to something at one end but had peeled off at the other. I pulled the label off and the noise seems to have gone BUT i also had a good push/pull/prod at anything else I could feel inside the side-panel gap so it was probably just coincedence as I mentioned previously.

Willing to bet it'll start squeaking again soon!

Darn it...now I am not sure whether I have got a squEEk or a squEAk!

Hi mate I only realised after I'd posted. Hopefully the sticker you found will have solved the problem. Mine is louder than ever an really doing my head in. I've got a really low tollerance for creaks/rattles in cars and I'm at the end of my patience. I know exactly where it's coming from as I can replicate without the car even moving by moving the strut that's inside the end of the dash.

Think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and book into the dealer. Didn't really want them tampering with the dash but don't think I've any option. I'm not up for dismantling half the dash myself on a 3 month old car. Nightmare!!!!
