Engine wont start no fuel delivery

Featured Replies

hi all, recently my cars been acting the goat with me, i've got a 1.9 tdi (90) classic 2004 (a4), i've had about 120mph out of the car before the gearbox diff gave up resulting in me sticking an other gear box in it, but before hand i had to replace the altenator, and had to remove the intercooler hose, so after all that my car now at 100~110mph roughly 3500~4000 revs, just gives up and it's like the turbo stops, but then i have to turn the engine off and restart her to get it alive again and if i maintain the saome speed it does the same thing dies on me and acts like a very sluggish sdi.

but recently on my way down from henrys skoda in glasgow the problem got worse, when i was going arround a roundabout it was as if she wanted to die on me as if there was no fuel and it was strugeling, so i was about the warning light whent and filled up the tank and went to dingo for a wheel bearing as i needed one, apon coming out of dingbro she woulden't start for me, on the dash i had on the rev counter side a light like the glow plug flas constanly, also had like a yellow tap light on the spedo side, after a few minutes of trying to start the car she finaly whent as if she was needing diesel, but she had a full tank. so i then aproached my mechanic the next day and the put it on a dia~ reader and it found 4 faults, 2 relating to the egr valve, one about the turbo underboosting and a fuel pump thing.

now after all this i have read these forums desperetly trying to revive my muched loved skoda, i took off the egr valve and it was really bad with dirt ect.. to i cleaned it and put it back on, i then took off the maf sensor, or air flow meter, and used electrical contact cleaner on it, stuck it back on to no avail, but then i took off the fuel lines between the tank onto the fuel filter and got my friend to tick the engine over, and nothing came from eithere fuel pipe. i then got my friend to tick the engine over while i had my head on the top of the fuel pump under the seats not a noise or nothing, so is it the fuel pump ? or is it the relay?

please help me, i'am having thoughts of a match and petrol!!!

If it has been taken care of it should be fine,Have you checked fuel filter to see if fuel is getting in there? try that if not check relay you will hear it click on,failing that fuel pump...

There's a relay under the dash on the drivers side labeled 109 which is prone to cause starting problems. Could be worth investigating. mbames seems to really know his stuff on diesels, probably worth dropping him a pm..

i took off the fuel lines that lead into the filter from the tank, nothing came out what so ever, i've tryed locating the fuse relay 109 but can't seem to find it, since that seems to be a more of problem rather than the fuel pump. will be going to halfords shortly in my friend more reliable xreg skoda lol to purchase a filter and go from there, thanks :D

If you have done that I would have pump tested??

i would test my self but to scared to cross a + and - to the pump incase i completely nacker it, might be able to save it at this point if the relay is a fault

Suspect one of the turbo hoses is not on properly. I swapped the alternator a few weeks back, and it was a bit of a b!tch to get at.

found 4 faults, 2 relating to the egr valve, one about the turbo underboosting and a fuel pump thing.

I have never seen an EGR fault code before.

Can you post up the specific fault codes you got?

then i took off the fuel lines between the tank onto the fuel filter and got my friend to tick the engine over, and nothing came from eithere fuel pipe. i then got my friend to tick the engine over while i had my head on the top of the fuel pump under the seats not a noise or nothing, so is it the fuel pump ? or is it the relay?

One of the fuel lines is the return to the tank. I am not that familiar with the fuel system, but I assume that when the ignition is on there should be 12v applied across the fuel pump. I know that when changing the fuel filter (even when you pre-fill it fuel) it takes a hell of a lot of cranking to get it started again.

The two fuel lines run over the top of the hard plastic hose which leads into the EGR, the clear one of those is the fuel-in, can you see any fuel in there - mine normally has a bubble at the highest point in the pipe.

As suggested above the "109" relay controls a reason amount of the electrics and I believe it has been superseded with a new/upgraded version, so it might be worth either borrowing one from a mate or buying one. It is located up above the pedals in the foot-well under the steering column.

Ha, sorry - been out gardening / washing the car and stuff this afternoon, so appologises for my somewhat late reply!

hi all managed to get her started again, was a little weird though witht the starter motor making a wierd noise i aint hered before, i went to halfords and got a new fuel filter, filled it with very expensive fuel thanks to our goverment, but yes anyways done all that at the filter end and cleaned the egr valve and the maf, replaced the 103 relay (gut feeling) and well it's started again and i've been out covered about 8 miles no problem as yet, but i don't expect it to last.

Hi mbames, i don't have the egr codes to hand but i'll go down to the garage and get them tomorrow

but yes the turbo hose was a son of a 81tch, since the other day i just stuck a jub clip on it and so far so good

but i dont have a clear fuel hose from the filter to the engine it's solid :(

well guys it seems to be ok now will have to try and go over the 110 mph mark and see what happens and get these warning lights reset

But now i have no brake lights haha :D

Almost got rear ended, but i've got a towbar hehe

thanks to all of you for this much need help and advivce you guys really are a life saver, going to need to search these forums now for a brake light related problem

I return is solid black, but fuel in is clear. Maybe they changed it, as your car is a bit older than mine, iirc.

But now i have no brake lights haha :D

Chances are it is the brake light switch which is up above the brake pedal. If you switched the relays over you may have dislodged it - it is a twist fit, and may not have been clipped in properly.

I have a towbar too.... good parking sensor :giggle:

Didn't realise there was autobahns in Scotland! Must go up sometime and give them a try! :giggle:

Thought all diesel cars had to have a clear pipe since the ninetys? might be misinformed, but if I'm right your car may have been run on red in the past hence a black pipe to hide it

aye i think your right, but why change it when it's going fine, but aye the m8 makes a good autobahn :p

erskine to langbank :D

Oh i got all the lights reset, went to henrys skoda for a vrs badge and spoke briefly with a mechanic of theres, he said with the turbo, it could be overboosting and the ecu cutting it out, but when on dianostics is said the turbo was underboosting, he advised me to change the hoses and then try the solaniod valves, anyone got any ideas ?

Oh mbames, yup the brake pedal switch was at fault, was covered in dirt and grime, taken it off and used some electrical contact cleaner and works again :D honestly this for is a lifeline for me haha :D
