Service and Cambelt and Brakes Quote

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just got a quote from my local dealer for the following (the car has done 83K):

40K Service

Cambelt and Water Pump

Brakes Front + Rear - Pads and Discs and brake fluid

total price £1189

Do you think this is a fair price ?

Ring another local dealer and find out.

I think I was quoted £650-£700ish for 4 year service and cambelt.

I would get an indy to definately do the brakes. I did the brakes on the Bora myself and saved half the cost of the parts by getting Brembo discs and pads from GSF. VW quoted something stupid like £360 just for the discs and pads without fitting. I picked the Brembo's up from GSF for around £170 iirc.

I guess if I went for an indy (must admit I haven't used an indy garage in years, always been main dealer as I change my cars every 3 to 4 years) I'd have to ask them to use Skoda parts as the warranty calls for it.

Your car says 07? Is it still under warranty? Don't need to use OE parts for the Brakes tbh as they are discs and pads.....can't see how having non OE and then having a fault on ABS for example would make a claim invalid and the fact they wouldn't even know whether they were OE or not.

£1,200 Yikes !

I would definitely shop around before I spent that sort of money. I hope that is not a normal, I had better start saving up.

My car has an extended warranty that I bought from Skoda (car plan). I thought that if you went to an indt garage when the car is under warranty, that you had to get them to use original parts otherwise those parts etc aren't covered by the warranty. If a none oem Cambelt is fitted and fails, you have to get the indy garage to sort it, with possible court involvement if needed. At least if a Skoda dealer does it then its down to then. Not saying it would be any easier of course.

Local vw/skoda independents are very competitive if you have a good one. My mark one octy had full service, cambelt and water pump for less than £500. Using all genuine parts too! I know this is cheap but £1200 is ridiculous. Even Skoda "only " wanted £700.

Had my cambelt + pump done at local indy cost me just over £300, dealer wanted near £700. Think £1200 is well over the mark.

Yes i understand that - I would always buy OEM for key parts such as belts and pumps and things....but brake discs and pads are like tyres imho...Go for a make you like and as long as they are right for the car i can't see how it would affect the brake/abs warranty should something fail.

Get it done at a Indy. Probably cost you about max 60% of that quote. They can still use OEM parts :)

The idea that main dealers somehow do it better is ridiculous. They just employ fitters, not mechanics. Save your cash.

Yeah point taken, can anyone recommend an indy garage in the South East around the Medway area. I've heard of Youngs at Wrotham, they are VAG specialists, but never used them

I had a similar bunch of work done on my 45k 4yr old Octavia 1.9TDi last year

except - service was a variable, no work on back brakes

plus I had full air-con service and MOT

Done by main dealer in Bradford; can't remember exact cost but it was round about £900 and I got a courtesy car for the day.

I part exed it at the same dealer 6 months later and got a VERY good part ex value based on the fact that it had full service history with them. So I like to think I got some of that money back! They stuck £1500 on the price, put it on their forecourt and it sold in no time!

Just had a quote from Youngs at Wrotham (independant Specialist) the same work using genuine parts etc, came in at £1228.51 :o . They said that if I didn't need the discs and pads the price would be £785

Just called a couple of other local Skoda dealers and they quote roughly £1190 give or take a tenner

I called 3 other main dealers (Beadles in Maidstone, Caffyns Sevenoaks and MotorPoint Dartford) and 2 independant VAG specialists (Youngs at Wrotham and GSM in Maidstone), they all quoted around the same price as my first quote. The guy at GSM was really good to chat too, he asked what type of driving I do etc and reckoned that my discs wouldn't need changing and probably not the pads as its mostly motorway driving. But, he did recommend that I changed the oil and filter myself between services as he reckons he's had to rebuild a few top ends on the diesel engines due to variable services. He said as the engine wears more, tolerances increase and the longlife oil is so thin that it cases premature camshaft wear/failure. I'd be quite happy to change the filter asnd oil between services, using original Skoda filters of course regardless wether the camshaft story is true or not.

So I've found that if I have the 40K service + cambelt & water pump + brake fluid change its gonna cost me about £750. So Skoda and Indy garages charge £440 roughly to supply and fit front and rear discs and pads !

Edited by cj_uk

bloody hell that's expensive. Pads front and rear is an easy job you could do yourself. You could drive to Northampton and have Unit 18 do it and it'd still be cheaper!

See if there is a local evening class in basic car maintenance. The one local to me was £60 for ten weeks.

Do you think this is a fair price ?

40k service £239 (Skoda dealer)

Cambelt & waterpump £469 (Skoda dealer)

Brakes, pads & discs all round (good quality aftermarket parts in an independent garage)about £400 (don't have the price to hand)

£1108 (17.5% VAT) so not too far off but I had all done separately you should get a bit of saving if all are done at one visit?

Hi 2Skoda, I can quite believe it would be cheaper. I've been rebuilding and servicing my classic and everyday cars for years until 2000 when I started buying new cars. The extended warranty runs out next year as the car would have covered 100K by then, I'll be quite happy to change pads/discs etc myself then. Must admit I do love working on cars but the newer they are the more electronics are in them, bring back my old Rover P5B coupe

I would get

Cambelt & water pump-Indie- 300

Brake pads & discs 300 both rear & front..indie

and 40k service done from skoda 239 makes it total 839 GBP

40k service £239 (Skoda dealer)

Hi Forester, Sherlodge did say that the original price before discount would be (around) £1450 ! but as I'm a loyal customer and have been dealing with them for 9 years (bought 3 new cars from them in this time) that they would do it for £1189. Obviously they think they're doing me a favour but the other quotes I got show that they aren't. This is something I should take up with them really.

Ajex, unfortunately the indy specialist garages quoted me the same prices as the main dealers.

Unit 18 prices -

Cam belt, tensioner and water pump - £250+ vat

Full service £120+vat. Add brake fluid change for less than £50 iirc.

And I'd bet if you rang Ali, brakes would be much cheaper than you've been quoted too.

I would just do the brakes myself....seems you know how to do it so not even worth considering imo. £160 for Pagid Discs and £60 for pagid pads so saving yourself £180 for a couple of hours work.
