Rob Clubley has a how-to on his website, but I forget the link! Basically, you remove the headlights and unscrew the backs off them, replace the bulb and refit in reverse order. It's fairly straightforwards, but time consuming first time because the headlights can be a pain to get in/out (especially with the headlight washers there in the way). The bulbs are D2S I think; but get the OEM type (Philips bulbs IIRC, I paid about £70 all in for a pair - do replace them in pairs too as the other one will be dim and bluey I expect compared to the new bulb).

It's nothing to be terrified of; if you want to upgrade your main beam bulbs with some uprated halogens then that's the time to do that too as to get into the headlight units on our xenon-equipped cars is always a pain. I'd be wary of fitting LED sidelights though; in my experience they don't last long and it's a hell of a faff to change them over, even if it is tempting to attempt to colour match to the dipped beam!

Hope this helps . . .

edit: here's Rob's website: Rob's headlight removal guide

second edit: I'd suggest using masking tape around the paintwork adjacent to the headlights and around the washers; saves them being scratched as you fight with the headlight unit to get it out! Can't remember where I picked up that tip from, but it's a good one.

For the pain involved, I'd second the suggestion of replacing other bulbs at the same time. Being lazy, I got the local dealer to sort it all out although I'd already bought (all) the bulbs from Powerbulbs - I think there may be a discount for Freedom members as well.

martyn pm me and i may be able to source you a pair mate

Or colored Leds. fitted green and obviously failed MOT, so back to white bulbs. Bought longlife bulbs badged for daylight running, in the hope I dont have to pull them apart for a while.

 +1 Deffo on the masking tape and plenty of it along the upper edge of the Bumper.
