Fans Always on Dealer Strugling

Featured Replies

I have 5 month old 1.4 TSI Estate.

About 6 weeks ago the fans started running all the time and running for 10mins after switch off. Even if all I do is turn the cold car on for 1 min (say while defrosting) then the fans stay on for 10 mins.

My small local main dealer has had the car 3 times now:-

1. Confirmed fan fault but did not have the required fan test box, rang local VW dealer (10miles away who had one) so booked for a week later.

2. Test confirmed fan fault so needed order part (new fan, as the controller is on the fan).

3. Fitted new fan, no change, fans still run all the time.

Next they are planning to test the wiring loom.

I would replace the thermostat but they don't seem to be inclined to do this.

Any advice?

Has anyone tried turning the aircon off yet?

Of course, it makes no difference Air Con on Heater on Heater off etc ect. Pulling the fuse works but not really practical.

Not really advise, but my fan sometimes stays on when I switch off the engine. If I restart and then immediately switch off again, this seems to switch off the fan! (Realise this doesn't help you, and sounds like I have my own intermittent fan problem!)

Try a search of the forums, I just did, typing in "engine fans" and got 71 results, I'm sure you will get a few suggestions from there.

If the connector on the fan is not wet then have a look at the fuse box.

I had mine do this and it turned out to be a combination of water in the fan connector and the fuse box from using a car wash with an underbody wash.

Had to take out the fuse box and dry out with a hairdryer and just used a can of compressed air (like for cleaning laptoos etc) to clean the fan connector.

This was on a TFSi but worth checking those.

I assume they checked for other faults showing on the computer when they had it in?

I had the problem with fans on my octavia running constantly, and was nothing to do with the fans. It was something to do with the ECU, and apparently the car sticks the fans on all of the time if there is something it doesn't like.

In my case, once the ECU was fixed, the fans stopped running constantly.

So a month on and we seem no closer.

Due to a family emergency I had to cancel the further investigations at my Local Dealer and drive 250 miles and stay away for a few days after about 3 days of not using the car I drove it 2 miles and then it would not start. Flat Battery so I had Skoda Rescue out to get it going, and drove straight to closest Dealer, they have had it a week now and so far have been unable to trace the fault. Skoda UK are providing test plans and also have been looking at the car remotely.
