1.9TDI MK1 Smoking

Featured Replies

Hu all,

Just wondered if it's normal for a 1.9 TDI PD 130 to smoke a little on first start up of the day? It's not excessive and it seems to clear after a couple of minutes. The car has 73K miles on it and is due a service (going to be done tomorrow)...Is it worth cleaning out the EGR valve or will my 1,000 miles per week be enough to burn off any carbon?

Any advice greatly appreciated, (especially from Rotodiesel...!!),

Cheers,

Robbie

Check all the glow plugs are working.

Thanks Fred.... Why would that cause smoking and how do I check them? All seem's fine really, the pre-heater light goes out after a couple of seconds and it starts first time.

Cheers

If just one plug is down the motor will do exactly as you describe. Somewhere here abouts is a resistance value that you can measure using a multimeter. It is simple to do before you look any deeper at other things.

Beaten to it  , Good to here you got the car Robbo, if its a heater plug it will run a little lumpy for a short while and then clear up. Get it checked and then give it a run for a week (avoiding those KY reg vans with the bump on the roof   )before you do anymore. 73k on these engines means its just run in.

Mine smokes a little on start up when its a cold morning and when the tank is full of Asda diesel, Doesn't happen when its full of Shell, work that one out.

Thats because you've put fuel in your Tank at Asda. Putting crunchy seaside objects in your tank will cause it not to smoke as it was not designed to run on that. I bet you throw in the odd seaweed too!

Sometimes common sense in drivers astounds me.. :)

Put a new air and fuel filter in it, and run an injector cleaner through half a tank, some prefer to dump half straight into the filter for a more potent clean, and afterwards give it some beans down the motorway through the gears, you should after a couple of good blasts see the smoke go for a while, PD's are a smokey animal anyway, both 1.9 and 2.0 versions, 2.0 is worse if anything.

Smoke on the PD is normal. Newer cars have particle filters, that also filters the visible smoke. My guess would be it's white smoke, which is normal for a cold diesel engine.

LOL

Roto,

The smoke is a bluey colour. Not excessive but enough to concern me a little. The engine has just been serviced (new air filter/fuel filter oil etc) and is running sweet as a nut. Would I be right in assuming it's a glow plug?

Thanks to all,

Robbie
