Can I connect to my work PC ??

Featured Replies

Currently I'm doing a lot of work at home as well as during the day - new workshop rota's and the like - the files are quite large and my PC in work does not have a CDRW - I cant use a USB stick cos all(2!) USB ports are in use.

I have broadband at home and at work, so I was wondering how easy it would be to access my work PC from home ??

I know the computers IP address on our network - but not what it's real world IP address is.Both computers have firewall and all the usuall pop-up and adware blockers etc

How could I do it - is it possible ????

Going to be difficult. You will need to setup port forwarding on the router at work to forward the ports required for file and print sharing. I wouldnt recomend it as it will make your pc accessible to all and sundry. It maybe possible using some security software to restrict access to your IP at home, but this will be problematic if you are using a dhcp internet connection.

Cheers Manny - I thought that it could not be that easy - or we'd all be doing it.

Oh well just have to pester them to get me a new computer

currently struggling with a Pentium3 of around 1ghz(I think) up untill a couple of weeks ago it only had 128mb - I nicked another 128 from a deceased pc! only 40gb hard drive and no CDRW - but for some bizarre reason it does have a DVD - but no speakers to listen to one !!!

And with this cruddy spec I run Windows XP,at least one office app at a time, plus Audi's intranet, Our electronic manuals and then 2 sessions of our own system management software -- and they wonder why I do work at home!!

I used to run a bit of software called PCAnywhere, it was very good indeed, sounds perfect for what you have in mind. Don't know if it works on Broadband connections though, I'd be suprised if it doesn't!

Alternatively get a USB Hub, it's a cheap way of increasing the number of USB's on your machine!

Thanks - that looks like it will do the trick - the site says it adjusts to available bandwidth so should be fine over broadband and looks secure too.

Think I'll try and push work for a new PC tho - would prefer to do work in work rather than at home, I was there from 6:30am-6:30pm yesterday de-virusing 12 PC's :thumbdwn: - scary really - they all had anti-virus software....but not updated since was installed in april 2003

they are now all virus free with auto-updating avs and adaware and firewall - hopefully that will keep them clear

I used to use winVNC with an encryption plugin. Could connect from work back to my PC at home, so was going through at least 2 firewalls. (One of which was very restrictive)

If you're just going to move files, might be easier to buy a USB hub and a memory key :)

winVNC ?? I'm sure one of the PC's that I devirused yesterday had a VNC icon in the taskbar - was too busy to see what it was - but looks like we may have that feature - I'll check in the morning....

But I think it may be easier to buy a USB hub and memory key...even if I have to buy them myself.

Does the encryption plugin use a different port to the standard vnc port as I think this is blocked at work.

Simple USB hub would sort ya out, and if you only have USB1.1 get a USB2 add-in card instead, the speed makes a real difference.

Aria was selling a 2GB memory stick for around 100 quid inc VAT, which is pretty darn good :D
