Rear wiper alternative position

Featured Replies

Hello everybody

I am from Greece and i'm very happy to be a member of this forum.I own a skoda yeti 1.8 tsi 4X4 since August 2010 and i have dine so far 8000km.I have a problem with the rear wiper alternative position function.I have tried to activate this function by the procedure that the manual states several times but i think that there is no movement from the wipers so far.I want to ask you if you have seen this tilted move that the rear wiper blade does according to the manual or is it something that we can not understand.I must say that the windscreen wipers do change position each time after i switch them off or the ignition switches off for the third time as the manual states.

Thank for any help that you may give me.

I have this ticked as on in the Maxidot (if it is the "Wiper" element) and to date have yet to see:

  • the front wipers doing an extra wipe after a washwipe
  • the rear wiper parking in different spots

So... I think the manual might be telling porkie pies and only the older Yetis had had these functions enabled... I might just be wrong or slightly thick. :giggle:

My SM is model year 2011.It is produced the 26th week of 2010.When i got it on August the first days that i had it the front wipers didn't change any position.I took it to the dealer and they did something with the CAN BUS.After that again nothing but after a few days and after some rains it worked.Since then the windscreen wipers do change position as the manual states. But i haven't seen any movement by the rear wipers.I think that since the manual states this function someway it must can be activated.Maybe again with the CAN BUS but i don't want to go to the garage for that sort of thing. So that's why i am trying to find something in the forum.

The required information is in the the manual. It does not require a maxidot "fiddle".

My front wipers do park in different positions. My rear one does not.

See p.65 in the manual for alternative rear wiper parking position

Kαλημέρα Alex & Good Morning Johann.

Our Yeti was built week 33 of 2010 and so is a 2011 model. Both front and rear wipers use the "Alternative Position" all the time.

Alex, I wonder if you are confused by assuming that the wiper parks in a completely different place, similar to the "Service Position" that the front wiper can do. The actual movement for the alternative position is quite small, only a centimetre or two at the most, and is there to prevent the wiper blade from adopting and retaining a particular shape by the curve of the windscreen. At least that is my understanding of it through reading the manual and observing "Tigger" (I wonder how the translation is in the Greek manual! The British translation leaves a lot to be desired! [at this point I am tempted to say it's all Greek to me, but perhaps I wont as I would not wish anyone to think I was being rude - which I am not!])

As to the extra wipe. Yes it does this also. After performing what I refer to as a "Wash Wipe", where the front wipers or not activated, but I cause it to wash the screen followed by several wipes of the screen. The screen is wiped again after a 5 second pause.

Page 63 Owners manual:

– Pull the lever towards the steering wheel into sprung position , the wash system sprays immediately, the windscreen wiper starts wiping a little later. The wash system and the windscreen wiper operate simultaneously at a speed of more than 120 km/h.

– Release the lever. The windscreen wash system stops and the wiper continues for another 3 - 4 wiper strokes (depending on the period of spraying of the wind-screen). At a speed of more than 2 km/h, the wiper wipes once again* 5 seconds after the last wiper stroke in order to wipe the last drops from the windscreen.

Anyway I hope this helps in some small way...

I can confirm this as I've just done it to Harvey. It's on page 65 of the manual.

I watched the rear wiper afterwards with the ignition switch on,and every other intermittant wipe it parks 1/2" further back up the screen ,so the blade is bent in the other direction.

Thank you Tony and all of you for the info.I don't use the Greek manual very much.I have downloaded the English one but in the activation procedure of the rear wiper they write the same .I think that mine doesn't move at all,not even a centimeter.I wonder if i caused a problem because i did the activation and deactivation procedure many times. Is it possible the ECU to have a problem by this procedure?

Where did you learned καλημεÏα?

As regards the ECU, I don' think you have done anything wrong!

Thanks for that.

My SM does not do the extra wipe - my old Octavia did but not the SM.

Having read the relevant page in the manual, you missed off a vital sentence:

"This function can be activated/deactivated by a specialist garage."

Ah...it is not activated by default then.

Mike

"This function can be activated/deactivated by a specialist garage."

Ah!!!!!!!! Result! So I was neither wrong nor thick! Another thing for the next VCDS visit then!

Is there any way that i can reset a function and start over with the activation procedure again?Maybe this could help if in someway i confused the system when i did the previous activations - deactivations.

I don't see this as a serious problem but i am curious why it doesn't do it.

Alternative park position of the rear window wiper

Each time after switching off the engine for the second time, the wiper blade of the rear window wiper is tilted. Thus, the life of the wiper blade is prolonged.

Activating

– Switch on the ignition.

– Push the operating level into the position A6  page 63, fig. 50 five times in succession within 5 seconds.

– Switch off the ignition. After switching on the ignition again, the alternative park position of the rear window wiper is activated.

For deactivating the alternative park position of the rear window wiper, proceed in the same way.

Mike: It was "standard" or the "default" on ours - Not fiddled with VCDS (yet!). That's why I did not include "This function can be activated/deactivated by a specialist garage" which seems to be a standard phrase that's included with just about all the different functions. Maybe it's just a quirk of the programming at the factory or a different software version?

Alex: Try a "Factory Reset" if you have the Maxidot display. It's quite easy and in the manual. It seems to fix a good many things. Not sure if you can do it without the Maxidot but someone on here may be able to tell you if it can.

Finally I did a factory reset but I can't say that I saw rear wipe moving. So if you discover something new about this function and how can be activated please publish it if you want.

whats the purpose of this rear wiper movement to a different position, does it make the wiper work better?

It's for the blade's rubber to stay in good condition.

I tried this and I think it's working though was expecting it to tilt more, as it seems the wiper lifts up about 1/2 inch just enough to set the rubber the opposite way. It does it every second wipe or every second time turning off the ignition.

The downside to this is that the glass can get scratched in the "park" position because the wiper will adjust its position whether the glass is clean or not. And we all know how dirty the back of the car gets. It is for this reason I understand it is not normally activated in those countries with a lot of dusty roads .

Also, as I have found with the fronts, the wiper blades can tear if you turn off the ignition when they are frozen to the glass. That "wear saving jump" might stop the blades forming a 'set' in summer, but can be costly when you have to replace them anyway 'cos they're ripped in winter!

I will check it out tomorrow and confirm for sure. I may be getting confused about the auto wipe it does when DSG reverse is selected

Thank you Jonceebee...
