Changing Gearbox Oil... Any Tips?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Keep getting crunching when changing through to 2nd when cold, and after doing some searches apparently changing the gearbox oil can help. I wondered if someone could answer the below question for me, as I'm a bit of a lemon when it comes to getting dirty under a car :giggle:

I've got 2Ltrs of Fuchs SAE 75w-80, is this the right stuff & do I have enough of it?

Also, other than the 'special' gearbox key thing that I have for undoing the drain + filler plugs, is there anything else I need to be weary or should know about?

Thanks Yall

I used about half a meter of garden hose, clean of course, fed down the side of the battery to the fill hole. This made it really easy to fill the box up.

I drained exactly 2 litres out. Of course warm oil drains a bit better than cold.

Good luck!

Make sure you can get the filler bung out before draining the box.

On my Octy 1 it took about 1/2 an hour to get it out & that was with the car on ramps, there were a few "I wish we hadnt started" moments as the old oil was already out

don't use the Fuchs oil - get the proper VAG oil - give a dealer your VIN for the correct spec oil

What's wrong with the Fuchs oil?

Brill advice, defo be undoing the filler plug first and robbing some garden hose  thanks alot.

Interested to know more about Fuchs VS VAG oils. Fuchs is bad??? :'(

I've been running Fuchs gearbox oil for ages with no apparent ill effects, so I'm interested to know this too!

STSKODA, you don't work for a VAG dealer's parts department do you? :smirk:

I used millers in mine

Aslong as its the correct grade it will be fine

Well got around to it today, very easy job. took about an hour to do, most of the time waiting for the oil to drain.

However though, I drained almost 2.5L :wonder:, But anyhow refilled it up with 2 and took it for a spin, no more crunchy gear troubles!!

Thx for the help all

It should take 2.3 liters.
