Tempted by Polo GTI

Featured Replies

After looking at the new Fabia last year, and a few other cars, I still wasnt convinced and therefore decided to have the cam belt changed (4.5yrs) along with water pump, dfull set of disks and pads, and front bushes, four new tyres, and service before the VAT went up. Best part of £1200 - ouch! but appart from two sets of tyres and two services its been a cheap car to run from 21k miles to 45k miles, so I put 12 months tax on it after the mot in February.

Sods law - was bored the other weekend so took a new polo gti out for an extended test drive - and now seriously regretting it! If they had had it in black pearl magic I would have signed on the line, but luckily the demo car was in white. Loved the handling of the polo, as well as the better brakes and the engine tone. Reminded me very much of the golf gti mk1 I had in size and handling.

Yes I know the new Fabia is cheaper, but I dont like the shape at all or the colours. I test drove one last summer and was impressed with the dsg box and tsi engine but couldnt live with the car.

So, the only thing betwee me and a change to a Polo gti is the price, and a feeling that if I wait a few more months there could be some better pricing or finance deals available. Am sure there will be no problem selling the fabia once a deal has been done.

Anyone else on here tried the new polo gti? If so, what did you think?

I would keep the Mk1 VRS to be honest. New VRS is just bog ugly period, a few questions regarding the DSG lag as well (on some cars only.) Over complex engine design, and not very good MPG. Polo is a very nice car, but VAG dealers leave a lot to be desired these days. Polo GTi is expensive for what you get...

As ever Mtech, sound advice.

I've no idea what car to go for next - unless something comes along that takes my fancy I can see me driving the Fabia until it rolls over and dies. I like niche cars - would just buy a bus pass than drive a Corsa or Fiesta.

I bought the vRS and my previous car (Lupo GTi) on the basis that I saw one and decided I liked them!

Yes I agree re the new Fabia - I just dont like the look of it, and driving it didnt set my pulse going at all, whereas the Polo gti was great fun to throw around the bends and looks miles better. The residuals will be better on the polo but the initial price is steep and there is no 0% finance deal to tempt me at present.

Have also been looking at the new mazda mx5 - far less practical but wife has a Nissen x trail so not totally out of the question. Was impressed with the drive in the mx5 a few months ago, and they stil have a 0% deal on if I put down the sale proceeds of the fabia mk1 vrs.

However, given the reluctance of VW dealers to discount, and the lack of a current glut of polo gtis in the country at present its probably better to hold off a while longer - having spent a shed load of cash on the vrs in December, and given the number of people on here who have sold their furbys and then regretted it, the temptation of something new needs to be resisted :-) especially when my insurance renewal came in at only £189 !
