So, after 21980km my 1.2 TSI caved in on itself

Featured Replies

I managed to put on 1700km myself - the former was done in service as a dealer demo.

One morning the car simply refused to fire - and there was no other recourse than to have it towed to the dealer. It's been sitting there for a week and a half waiting for some clarifications.

What I do know is that the timing chain skipped and catastrophic engine damage ensued. Damaged pistons, valves and cylinder liner. Most likely next step is a new engine. Covered by warranty of course.

Quoting a forummember on vwvortex.com:

I wonder when exactly that happened? The 1.2TSI has hydraulic chain tensioner, thus it might skip a tooth if there's low pressuere (I have heard some advice that one should never shut such an engine immediately after startup - always wait at least 10 seconds for the pressure and tension to build up; also, no rolling starts with dead battery).

Is this a common problem - if so, heads up!

HI Dawg,

Sorry to hear about your engine failure :(

On the positive side it never happened while you were actually driving, and the warranty will cover the cost of a new engine (if needed.)

I had 2 turbo's failing within 6 months of each other on my last car (Mazda MPV diesel). Fortunately I had taken out a after market warranty, but the inconvenience and endless phone calls, and waiting 7 weeks for the car was a nightmare. That's why me and the missus decided leasing was the best option.

Let us know how you get on?

I haven't heard of a 1.2TSi failing before.

At least as BH said above, under warranty and should be sorted in no time!
