PD140 / PD170 part variance to consider before remap?

Featured Replies

I am beginning to wish i'd have bought the VRS but went for the L&K because it had every conceivable accessory for a lot less money. I do 95% motorway mileage on cruise but fancy some more power for the other 5%!

Question is... if I go for a remap, will it be stressing any internal components or is the PD lump basically differing only by mapped power? Its over 100k now so dismissed to the remap at the beginning for fear of stressing an aging engine...but if they are the same then surely it will have the same reliability as a vrs (minus the brakes of course).

Also, i have seen a few sites stating economy maps...surely any increase in power and torque will give you that by default if driven correctly???

Cheers.

I know for one that the turbo is different on the 170, maybe injectors too.

You would effetively have to increase the speed of the smaller turbo to provide the same boost as the larger one, though quite how close it currently is to it's limit I don't know....

IIRC turbo is the same size, although fitment is slightly different, 170 has slightly different Head design and injection system.

you will have extra stress to clutch and flywheel mainly. try to keep the torque around the 260lbft-280lbft mark and you should be fine as long as you dont drive like a loon.

If you baught the car before 2009 be very happy that you didn't get the VRS.

There are quite a few diferences between the two engines. The most important ones are:

-Turbo

-ECU (Siemens in the VRS and BOSCH in the L&K)

-Injectors (Siemens in the VRS and Bosch in the L&K)

There have been allot of problems with the piezoelectric injectors in the BMN engine that also comes in the VRS.

I don't know if you have a DPF but that too was a major problem with the VRS.

As for the remap... your engine should not have any problems with a stage 1.

I have a remapped PD140 with over 370,000kms, I got it remapped when it was about a month old (6000kms) I actually think the engine is running as well as it has ever run. It recently aced its NCT (MOT) with smoke test results you would expect from a new car. Today I drove it like Miss Daisy for 500kms and it posted 60mpg on the maxi-dot for the journey !!!!

Get it mapped, you won't regret it.

Give Ben at Shark Performance a call. He is the expert and will give you all the advice you need, even if you don't use him.

I had Elsie the Helipad remapped at 2000 miles and 1 month old. No regrets. OK I have the CR140DSG, but it doesn't matter.

THere is a group buy on, or there was a group buy on for the STS kit that Ben sells - take a look at his website for more info. He is a sponsor.

+1 for Ben@Shark, he is just round the corner from you. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

He remapped my 55 Plate L&K PD140 late December at about 120K. It has just hit 128K and is running better than ever.

I have just driven like Miss Daisy back from Coventry (about 150 miles) and averaged 62.7mpg!

Realistically I get an average of about 52mpg now, instead of 48mpg before.

I wouldn't worry to much about putting extra stress on components, all a stage 1 remap does is tune the car to the outputs that it was intended to produce. Vehicles are 'de-tuned' from the factory to appeal to a wider market based on fuel quality, service intervals, emissions and enviromental conditions, iirc a remap on the PD140 will increase power to approx' 180 bhp (not sure about the torque) and 200+ from the 170, if driven sensibly you should notice an improvement in mpg but if your like me you will have a slightly heavier right foot due to the extra GG's so forget about it! :giggle:

That's spot on, thanks. I think ill get in touch with Shark. Just had a new flywheel and clutch so should be ok for a while.

I am currently averaging 53mpg, or so the display tells me, and that's pinning the cruise at 70ish ;)

My car was mapped "2.0 tdi pd140' to 170 and 290ftlb at 39k miles its now at 53k and on a miss daisy trip for 250 miles I was getting 56mpg and running perfect no additional smoke or anything. These engines are are good for 200k plus if serviced correctly and so on.

Forgot to mention my cars a 55 plate 2006 model and on the miss daisy trip I had 4 adults in with a boot full
