new member looking to buy a vrs

Featured Replies

Hi guys, hopefully i have the right section

im looking at buying an octavia vrs (not sure whether petrol or diesel yet) to replace both my astra and my passat

naturally i have a few questions and where better to ask than the guys that own them

firstly -

what is the factory standard equipment like? what options do people recommend?

is it possible to retrofit any of the extras cheaper than ordering them on the car? if so which ones?

is the satnav any good?

and with the uprated headlights, can they be switched into euro mode?? if so does it do it properly or does it just level the beam off?

How long is the standard warrenty and have you the option to extend it when it runs out?

And how is the service from dealers? Do they try and worm out of work like vauxhall have always done with my astra?

also how big is the tank and how do you guys find they are on fuel?

Both the diesel and the petrol versions

your comments/feedback/answers would be greatly appriciated guys

I am sure someone will provide a more comprehensive reply but in terms of petrol v diesel, unless you do mega miles, I would recommend the petrol.

I have averaged 30mpg in the first 2k miles and that is with a re map from day 2. The tsi engine is really really good and super smooth. It's significantly quicker standard than the cr diesel in my opinion and more fun to drive.

I've had a tfsi vrs and a cr diesel vrs prior to my current tsi vrs and for me, the tsi is the best of all of them.

It re maps well with better gains than the old tfsi too.

I have had mine for 13 months from new, covered 36k, owned a very good looking Audi before that. CR engine is great. What would I fit as extras? Tinted windows, bluetooth and parking sensors. I wouldn't ask the factory to do them though as it's a lot cheaper as a retrofit.

-people say that bluetooth and maxidot are a must.

-Parking sensors are a lot cheaper, the downside is there is nothing on the display of the stereo like the factory fitted ones.

-A little bit of rubber came away from the leading edge of the rear screen. I mentioned it expecting them to just glue it, they replaced the whole rear screen.

Bluetooth is cheaper to retrofit

Thanks for whats been said so far

Dealer service sounds good

Dont really want to modify (specifically mechanical mods and mapping) as i'd want to keep the warrenty intact

Although im looking at black so i reckon i'd paint the wheels black for a stealth look, maybe de-chrome too

The petrol model does sound more appealing to me

With retrofitting extras i did mean genuine parts so it'll work as if it came from the factory

I thought the vrs came with tinted windows as standard?

Bluetooth would be a must for me and iv read a bit into the maxidot that was mentioned, it does seem good however i didnt see it on skodas website

Or is that MMI?

Also has anyone got the satnav and how do they rate it?

That and the multimedia set, hows that? Does it control ipods etc from the headunit?

With MDI you can connect an iPod and you will control it with the stereo, you'll also see track names etc. But IMO the SD card works just as well, and you can get a 32Gb SD card to boot.

How many miles are you going to be doing?

Oh and the boot on an Octy is 20Litres bigger than the Passat

With regards to Bluetooth you can get genuine parts and have them fitted. Working the same as factory fitted

I'll be doing somewhere in the region of 10-15k miles a year

Probably less as iv started riding a pushbike to work now

I reckon the petrol would be my better option

Do you need the mdi to have the sd card slot?

Just iv been looking at the nav and i read that has 20GB internal storage space, any truth in all that?

That and you get the maxidot if you order the satnav dont you?

I still would love to know about the AFL lights and whether or not they can be switched to euro mode

Nice call on the boot aswell, my mate has a 1.6 octy and i was astonished when he opened the bootlid

Beats my passat hands down, epecially considering it a saloon you cant fit anything large in the boot

Sd card slot is standard.

Xenons can be switched to euro mode, which you can do yourself if you have added maxidot as an extra, or by a dealer if you don't have it.

The euro mode is not a proper conversion to left hand drive headlight alignment, rather it just stops the beam spreading upwards on the left.

The Sat nav is good but expensive and can be retrofitted for a lot less with unit off Ebay, though there is the feeling that not all the units on Ebay are from "known" sources.

The autolight feature is worth having as it gives you an auto dimming interior mirror, tunnel lights and auto wipers. I'd say the factory parking sensors are worth paying for as the display in the radio is useful when parking in tricky situations.

If you go for an estate then sunset glass makes a big difference to the appearance though it can be retro fitted for a little less and in a tint of your choice.

Leather is nice and heated seats are always worth having in my opinion.

MDI is nice but expensive and can be added later.

One definite worthwhile option is a spare wheel as it's only about £50 but a lot more if you subsequently decide you want one, plus the well is already in the boot so you don't lose any space.

And of course it should be in race blue if you want the fastest vRS

I've found the rear parking sensors very good and comes with a graphic display in the Bolero.

The factory Bluetooth works seamlessly when connecting to my RSAP equipped Nokia 5800, using this this system gives you a more powerful transmitter and external aerial.

I think for about £150 the auto dim mirror, auto lights and auto wipers is well worth it.

Do not forget to order the spare wheel

can you buy an auto interior dimming mirror aftermarket? how much if so?

cheers

Had some really bad news today

The vrs is so popular here that the waiting list is enormous

The earliest any of the dealers could get me one is september

Which by then i will have left my current place of work and will not be entitled to tax free goods any more

I have however left my name down in case any of the dealers recieve cancellations from customers in the near future

On a positive note (depending on whether you're biased i suppose) is i have been offered a nice deal on an insignia sri

Im going to have a look at one tommorow
