C36 AMG or E36 M3

Featured Replies

Any past owners on here, what are they like and the spec?

What insurance group is the AMG? i believe the M3 is group 19.

Don't get an M3.

They are not very good. Handling is so so, performance is OK, but they are gutless (remember this is relative). The merc is a much nicer car, it is rarer and has more class, and also a distinctive lack of lexus back lights on them - lol.

I had an E30 M3, but that might be too hard core for you.

The spec is as you would imagine leather, climate electric everything..........

But as a "M-Power" owner of the past, please not the obscene running cost including parts fuel etc etc.

let me know if you need more advice

Cheers

Andy

M3 gutless? :rubchin:

Mercedes are for pensioners IMO.

Oi! :D

(actually it's going on Friday....)

I love the mercs - but personal preference !

1440 kilo 321 bhp @ 7400 rpm

Torque

258 ft lbs @ 3250 rpm

Power to weight ratio

0.22 bhp / kg

Top Speed

155 mph (limited)

0-60 mph Acceleration

5.5

I know that paper is no judge, but on paper they seem quick. Because of the nature of the highly strung car it has good power but little torque. Although torque is relative to weight. It is quite weighty and a belive the chasis was taken from an existing production model in the Vauxhall range.

My prefernce would be the E46 330i with 230 hp and 230lb/ft very drivable indeed !

How do u mean 320bhp is gutless? I like the E30 but there still expensive for such an old car.

After looking at the spec of the amg, its similar to a remapped octavia rs so not much point trading the running costs to pay alot more for something similar.

Not too keen on the C32, a bit too round.

Fast pensioners at that ;) Depends on the model you get - the newer models are not bad at all (if I could afford to even consider one heehehee)

Ok

Just remember this BHP sells cars, lb/ft wins the races. 320 doesn't mean a thing. Did you know an F1 car, can't set off at tickover, despite 800+ bhp.......

Really? So why do F1 cars rev to 19k, and have relatively little torque? And who's selling F1 cars? Was pretty sure having a fast reliable car which handles well and a decent driver would be more useful for winning races rather than having some torque... :rubchin:

Rob.

Doesn't anyone like the Audi bruisers.I know where my money would go :D

As for the better car here.Bit too hard to choose. Both a bit tasty

You sort of answered your own question there ??

Dont like audis, there a bit bland. Like the UR quattro but again its too old. I think the S4 is too round.

Round isn't your thing then Mike?

A colleague of mine has a '51 M3 for sale if you're feeling flush - somewhere around the 30k mark, I believe ...

Don't ask me what E number that is, though :(

E46 M3 - a good car indeed

Nick i really dont like round cars (jellymoulds) somehow I cant see myself getting insured for an e46 m3, besides I dont the look of them. I really like the dakar yellow e36's. Classic shape, needs no exterior mods whatsoever.

All the M3s are in Group 20. Mercedes AMgs vary between Group 14 for the C 200 EVOLUTION PANORAMA AMG CDI (122) to Group 20 for the S 55 L AMG, CLS 55 AMG COUPE, SL 65 AMG CONVERTIBLE and others. See below:

have you spent much time driving newer M3's?

You claim to have owned an E30... but thats the shortest eulogy ive heard.... most owners rave about them? come on man we are talking one of the finest handling cars around...

As for E36.. the orig car was 286hp and was a little gutless. the Evo (321hp) was significantly better.

E46 is marginally quicker but in terms of handling there is little to choose between them.. E36's however dont blow engines with quite the regularity that E46's do.....

The E46 does have a clear advantage if you want either cabrio or auto.. both are much improved over E36.. but as a straight coupe the gap is much closer.

As for the AMG... if you wanna go round corners fast then dont bother.. the C36 is a sweet car but gets destroyed by a mildly tuned Octavia... the C43 is understeery as is the newer C32.. which will eat most things from the lights with a pulley kit! and does handle better as it doesnt have the infernal recirc ball steering.

Paul didnt you have an e36 evo m3 at one point? How do you rate them and how old was you at the time?

Well I have to say I'm very surprised of the few posts whereby people talk of the E36 M3 engine being 'gutless'. Have those people actually driven an E36 (and I do not just mean a quick test drive)??

I have not driven an E36 M3, however I do regularly drive the car you see below. Its has the E36 M3 Evo engine (321bhp). Gutless....I dont think so.

Oh, and far less common that E36 M3's :)

I did have an Evo... it was defo not gutless... not effortless and it needed to be driven... but defo not gutless!

Oi , you're parked on double yellow lines .............. :D
