53 Ambiente TDi driver aids

Featured Replies

Evening All

Does some happen to know what driver aids I should expect to find on this car please?

As those that have seen my other threads will know this has a checkered history and I want to confirm what it should have in the way of ABS, traction control and similar. Then I'll go find me a field and have a play to confirm what it now has and if they're working.

There isn't any traction control related buttons on the central console.

Thanks

Hi Tom,

Not sure if the Ambiente has it, but if there's a button called ASR, then that's traction control ( I think!)

If there's any lights on the dash, there will be systems out of action. All lights off, and all should be well.

I would imagine you would only have ASR and ABS on that car. Power steering is an obvious one.

There's no ASR button, I have that on mine which is the Elegance model from the year before.

The problem is that the previous owner has changed this from an auto to a manual. SO I don't know what it should have, what might have been disabled, or what might not be working.

So my plan is to go and find a field or a gravelled car park some where and give it some beans and slam on the anchor and see what happens. But if it's not equipped with traction control or something I don'd want to be worrying about what wasn't there in the first place.

Lights on the dash is close, but if you're going to the trouble of changing a auto to manual, disabling an annoying light is nothing. Or for that matter while faffing around accidentally knackering a wire.

Tom

Hooking it up to VCDS will also help, and its tricky to get faults past that system. ;) The airbag light might be "out" on my dash, but plenty of codes come up on VCDS! :giggle:

True, still need to really have a play with that, I've only got the cheap ebay unit and the unregistered VCDS-Lite.

Is VCDS hard to fool though, there are plenty of mods in these pages where a resistor is added to keep lights from coming on.

Tom

you won't have ASR or anything fancy I would think, ABS should be there they dont make an octy without it.

just brake hard in a gravelly car park and you should soon see if its there and working.

vcds would be hard to fool with abs faults tho as its not a simple setup and linked into the engine and dash etc, whats the story then I seem to have missed that thread

It's spread over, repeated in a couple.

I purchased a 53 plate Ambiente TDi for the girlfriend, private sale, sold as a manual. Was told when we viewed it that he was the second owner, purchased from a mate who'd been super anal with everything being done by Skoda for the first 6 years of it's life. He purchased it, ran it for a while, performed a DMF to SMF conversion then decided he didn't really need the car so was selling. The car is visually in very good condition, I took it for a spin, pulls OK, stops OK, brakes a little soft, but stops none the less, no smoke etc etc.

However when we came to renew the tax it comes up at £180 rather than the £110 we expected, then the V5 arrives and it's down as an auto. Queue lot so of faffing around with Skoda, DVLA and more - no reply from the previous owner on the matter. I discovered the original owners name and address in the service book so sent him a letter, he was good enough to reply confirming it was a auto which he sold in January this year with a faulty auto box.

So it would seem the character we purchased from had a donor and made the changes. Now to be honest, other than not being what we thought it was and the higher tax, the car is OK aside from one fault. When at a stand still 1st is OK, but when actually driving unless you come to a complete stop first is very hard to engage. I haven't had a chance since we got it to look properly, but when you look in the engine bay the counter weight lump looks to be getting very close, may well be touching something forward of it, no idea what it is, but it has a round black plastic cap over it and is shaped with a groove down it and a nut/bolt (can't remember which) in this groove.

When I quickly ran VCDS the only thing I remember was TCM (?) not found, that apparently is the auto control box, it's no longer auto so it won't find it.

So while I decide what to do with this vehicle I want to confirm what it should have and that they are working. ABS I plan to test exactly as you say. ASR it doesn't have, but my fathers much old SLXi has EDF (think that's the one) does/should this have anything similar that can be empirically tested?

Top it all off the brake warning light came on last night, is that for the disk pads only or does it also get triggered by the drum shoes? I don't mind changing the pads, but shoes can be a pain and I don't have the luxury of a drive. I got my axle stand back tonight so tomorrow it's lift it up and have a look.

Pad wear indicator is on the front nearside inside pad. There are no indicators on the rear (if you had discs, so I can't imagine drums have them). Have you checked the brake fluid level?

OK, bought the pads this morning, front left wheel off, there is loads of pad left, on both pads. Took the front right off, the same. I've checked the fluid, plenty.

So why is it complaining about the pads?

I've never heard of a sensor in shoes for the back drums.

Just heading down with the computer to scan the car properly for the first time.

I took the car to try the ABS, sadly every gravel car park I could find had daft members of the public in! I did try shoving the brakes on hard, but never felt anything, skid or ABS. I tried pulling away hard with one wheel on a grass verge and it span.

If the pad warning is on would the ABS be inactive?

From the error in 03 about the missing Transmission Control Module, would that also disable the ABS?
