Another 312mm Thread!

Featured Replies

Well after the problems i have had with getting this kit together, being supplied a MK4 288 setup, not being able to get hold of carriers for said setup..... spending months looking for them.

Got a set of Carriers, Nice pay day yesterday so a trip to the motorfactors for discs and pads and now the GF has to hold the seat when i touch the brakes!

Alls i will say is do the conversion! i have soo much more confordence in the car now i know it will stop!

I can highly recomend this setup to EVERYONE!

Only thing is after fitting 17" wheels they dont look as meaty if i still had the 16s on :giggle:

Makes me wonder why they never fitted these as std!

Best thing I ever did. They should have definitely been standard

One of the best things you can do, espechially after a re-map.

yep - defo an essential upgrade...

how much then for the bits ? (roughly)?

This will be me soon aswell as 256 rears

I paid £100 for the 312 set up, used off Ebay. I'm looking for 256mm rears but they are much harder to find (for £100 anyway).

@farmer11

that's a great price, I've not been on here for about a year, and the prices I seem to remember then were about £250 for 312's off TT's that had been upgraded, and were being "flogged"

If you dont want to go down the secondhand route for getting 312mm brakes what cost are you then looking at and are there specific or best calipers you need to go for ??

Well i know the Carriers NEW are £90 Each so thats £180 just for carriers.

Not sure on the Calipers but they are not cheap! bout £130 each i think. = £260

So before you have even looked at discs you are looking over £400!!!!

98% of the time the ebay ones just need a lick of paint!

Are you talking about a specific make of carrier and caliper. If so, which ones and where to buy from ie. dealers or specialist supplier. Thanks.

This makes me look forward to my brembo setup even more :')

cheers matt!

Yea not seen anywhere else which supply the carriers.

Do you need that caliper rewind tool for doing this? Also, how much brake fluid would I need for the change?

With 312's you'll soon find they dive a lot on std suspension which unsteady the car while driving at pace. Can be sorted out by some eibachs or the likes :D :D

No, only for the backs, iirc 400-500 ml?

Excellent. A single 500ml bottle should do fine then!

I was going to just replace rear discs and pads (standard size) whilst I was at it. And possibly clean up the calipers a bit. So I guess I will actually need one regardless. Ta for the info though :)

i think the standard brakes are good enough tbh

i've never really had to stop that hard, i use engine braking and read the road ( god i sound old )

it also depends on your tyres, shocks etc to how well you stop too so to an older or higher milage car you may feel the benifit more than someone with a newer/lower milage car.

i'd do the upgrade just for the looks if anything though lol

Yeah. I never brake hard so that's what I am mainly doing it for if I am completely honest. Mine are due replacement, so I thought I may as well upgrade to 312mm :)

I've heard the argument being thrown around that it could be the difference between hitting someone, and stopping just in time though....

i might do it when i'm due new pads etc we'll see what the cash flow is like at the time.

how much does it cost roughly for everything then?

I picked up new (well, refurbished) carriers and calipers off of ebay for £155. I've no doubt you can find a breaking Mk1 Octavia vRS / Mk1 Audi TT / S3 / Golf mk4/5(??) for a hell of a lot cheaper than that though. Mintex discs and pads are about £100 for a disc / pad set.

Carriers brand new from the dealers I hear are something around the region of £100... each... *without* the calipers!

I've just got to decide on the colour now. Mix some Hammerite Smooth Dark Green + White to get a shade of OE green, or to heck with it and do them Hammerite Smooth Red (like an SE?). Might just go for red...

I swear this nose-dip saved me having to fork out on at least one occasion - proceeding along an unfamiliar NSL towards the end of a 5 hour journey, I came round a bend to see the road disappear downwards, no indication of direction beyond the steep crest. I will freely admit now that I was travelling too fast for the road, so with no-one behind me I stamped on the brakes. Nose went right down, which I'm pretty sure caused the wheels to stay in contact with the road, rather than soaring like a proverbial brick off the crest, leading to god-knows-what damage on landing. I may be wrong, but thats certainly what it felt like! Was REALLY glad of the 312's that day (and I learned a valuable lesson too!)
