PAINT FINISH QUALITY?

Featured Replies

Hi comrades just started cleaning the interior of the doors, should I be happy with the finish inside the hinge section of the rear door both side?,or should I except this as a given and forget about it,or should I complain as I have specked the extra metallic finish with a premium of over £400.:thumbdown:I have never seen this before in any of my cars, are skoda cutting corners here or is it the way its always been?,will this give enough protection from rust?,can I see it ! yes I can every time I clean the car, what to do????

here are some pics

Hard to tell with your flash on, is the metalic finish inconsistant?

Have'nt seen that uneven paint on any of my cars. I would take it to the dealer and tell them to do a proper job...

the problem is around the nuts and hinge all the rest is fine, its awful

I wouldnt worry about it..

Its still protected from corrosion and it cant be seen

I would mention it so you have protection should any warranty issue arise in that area. Plus if Skoda get to hear of it, they hopefully will make it better for other people who buy Skodas in the future :)

My paint is ok but at less than one year old the rear hatch 'Skoda' badge is corroding

badly around the edges

My badge on the rear hatch has gone funny under the top layer of plastic too, the outer silver ring. I also feel the quality of the paint on my Skoda isn't as thick and durable than any of my previous cars. Stone chips are all over the front, thank goodness its white and doesn't show too much. I've just put it down to the ecological paints used these days.

I dont have that problem, but my paint is chipped all over the front, bonnet and sides of the car... very shoddy paint IMHO. Ive never had a car chip as bad as this one.

After I read your post on paint chips I went and had a look. I have several areas also on the front and bonnet. It appears to be the top coloured layer and doesnt appear to have gone through the base coat. I will have to get some touch up paint !

Maybe the paint used is more brittle and doesn't flex when it gets a small impact, just cracks off. My old 1.2 HTP never chipped so easily.

I checked our other Fabia. An 8 year old 1.4 MPI. The rear badge is a as clean and shiny as the day it was new. Maybe I should specify an old one for a replacement !

That level of cover is fine, the corrosion protection is provided by the first coat which doesn't have to be covered to offer it's corrosion protection (primer, base coat (colour) and clear coat are just expensive options in those areas!). They are just reducing their costs by putting less paint on where it is less important, which is quite common these days... You'll probably find that the spare wheel well isn't painted either as I think Skoda stopped painting these a while ago.

To qualify this I currently work for a company that manufactures automotive paint and have been working with the first corrosion protection layer for over 2 years, supporting Honda. It is a full immersion electrically applied coat (called electro-coat) which covers the whole body inside and out. I am about to leave and go to work for Honda in their research and development department working on surface treatments.

Suffice to say you shouldn't have a problem... Although reporting it to Skoda will cover you if you do have any issues :)

On a slight side note I currently have a white Octavia with just under 7k miles on it and am getting bad grey / black staining around the exhaust (petrol not diesel). Not a sign of good paint work (different paint to the body). However it's a company car which will get handed back next week so I'm not that bothered :) Picking up my brand new furby VRS tomorrow, can't wait!!! :D

You should see the paint quality of Honda! I wouldn't worry about this as it's covered under warranty.

A problem around the nuts is always serious  As for the paint, my car is superbly finished and has the same quality paint around the door shuts and under the bonnet as it has elsewhere. Having had a BMW which was not painted properly around the hinges I was so pleased with the Fabia. I would definitely be taking it back to complain. Perhaps you could have a peak at one or two others in the showroom which might help you to make your claim.
