Why does Bluetooth kit come with Shark Fin aerial?

Featured Replies

Noticed I have the shark fin and stubby aeriel but no SatNav. Searching on here suggests it is becasue I have bluetooth option. But as BT is just to let the Bolero and mobile phone communicate, and has nothing to do with GSM signal, what does the Shark fin do? Is there a GSM amplifier in the car?

Apologies if already answered, but my search found nothing on this.

It is a GSM aerial. If the phone connects using RSAP then the car is in control of the Sim card (Remote Sim Access Protocol). Basically the 'phone' built into the bluetooth module uses the sim card in the phone. I love it as i rarely loose signal whereas with the nokia kit in my old car the signal would drop as soon as you hit a country lane etc.

Knew I should have got the bluetooth option . . .

I was just going to go aftermarket myself but the RSAP sold it to me!

BUT

I have bluetooth built in on the Fabia vRS and it has a normal aerial..not a sharkfin one

I think only the Bluetooth Premium kit had the independent GSM module with rsap capability; the normal kit used the phone to make the calls like a bluetooth headset would..

Think the Fabia is only GSMII and not GSMIII as in the Octavia so no RSAP i believe.

I've got a shark fin and stubby on mine but no bluetooth, would this have been the skoda bluetooth option when the car was new or is it because I have the built in sat nav? Has the previous owner removed the bluetooth kit?

Bluetooth is the one thing my cars missing :(

Thanks JRW. Hadn't really clicked what RSAP was or did. Was using built-in BT on my drive home tonight and gave me a good quality sound for the call over 15-min without dropping call. Much better than the UConnect system in my old Chrysler.

Hooks up to my iPhone 3GS well too, leaving it to run my Nav software and speed camera alerts!

My vRS gets better and better.

You aren't using RSAP then if you are using an iPhone! The iPhone doesn't suppport RSAP... :giggle:

Still gives better performance in the Skoda - maybe thinner metal

I knew iPhone didn't support RSAP on earlier software but assumed (wrongly) that as it now hooks up and transfers phone book it had been added.

So the outcome is the Shark Fin does nothing for me with an iPhone or a BB (work phone)!!

I'm a telecom engineer too - but wired, not wireless!!

Thank-you.

Having an external aerial also means that the car's phone transmitter can transmit a stronger signal (when using a RSAP phone)

I have never had a call drop out as the signal strength is usually the maximum 5 bars

IMO a brilliant bit of kitemoticon-0148-yes.gif

BB's have RSAP.....When they feel like it! Mine connects if it feels in the mood. My Android Samsung Galaxy S works great though.

Even better how about we don't talk on phone's when we drive, even on blue-tooth. i've lost count the amount of times people have nearly hit me when there talking on phones when driving. I know i may upset people on here, but what would you say if you hit a kid when on the phone. (face to face with the parent)

How about we don't talk to the passengers either, smoke, eat, drink......

Apparently we somehow get more sucked in to a phone call than we would talking to a passenger or eating/drinking/tuning the radio etc. It's exactly the same effect you can see in pedestrians with a phone stuck to their ear.

Don't get me started on texting . . . :(

Think you miss the point, have you ever watched a driver on the phone when driving, they have no idea whats going on around them.

On the phone yes, on a bluetooth kit no. In my eyes it is just the same as driving with a passenger in the car to be honest.

Some people may find this difficult (some people seem to find basic driving difficult though :wonder: ) but i don't have a problem driving whilst talking on the car kit. I don't have full blown conversations or business meetings on it like some would, but I think that they have a purpose and you shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush for having a bluetooth kit.

Interesting thread this. On a Yeti one does not get a shark fin even if you have Bluetooth between Bolero and car! Weird!

As to talking on a handsfree kit and driving: I saw a study once stating that you lose most of your PERIPHERAL vision when your mind has to consentrate on a phone call whilst driving. So you are still steering like normal and think you are missing all the big things in front of you, but it is the things next to you that will be the end of you (or at least be the cause of a big repair bill!).

Saw the question and wondered if any of you whiz kids could help with my query. I have just taken delivery of a New Octavia VRS 2 litre DSG Petrol. I did not order the Blue Tooth kit but when the car arrived it had the nessessary buttons, although they depress It does not work. Can any body tell me if bluetooth is fitted and just needs activating or is there a component missing.

You will not have the 'black box' under the drivers seat. This is in effect a complete mobile phone kit without the SIM card.

It can be retrofitted although I think it is quite expensive
