how to get turbo flutter through exhaust?

Featured Replies

hi i have seen the skodas make the chatter out of the exhaust and was wondering what makes it do it . mine is de-catted and has a custom back box on it to . nice exhast noise but no chatter, does it do this when it has panel filter fitted ?

thanks

Seems like total pot luck. My mates full miltek sounds great, but another fabia with the same setup sounds totally different lol

Ask TreborB think theres 333 after his name maybe, best sounding fabia ever!

Though very quick google searching its due to the recirculation valve not recirculating fast enough and air pushes back onto the blade which makes the chatter, induction kit helps funnel the sound out too.. 50/50 on if its damaging to the turbo, will look more into this. If anyone has more info feel free to give a shout..!

Edit:

Wiki says:

There is confusion in the automotive world about so called "wastegate chatter" or "turbo flutter". A noise created on lifting off the throttle in a turbocharged car, commonly described as a chipmunk or a rattlesnake, is often stated incorrectly as being a result of the turbo's wastegate closing.

The noise is in fact the air compressed by the turbo passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo after the airflow is abruptly halted by the throttle plate closing, called compressor surge. However, in some cases, i.e. where the throttle plate doesn't open fast enough or is set up to only react to high boost, some chatter will remain. Surge can occur on diesels when the turbo is attempting to pressurize the air at a higher pressure ratio than the compressor wheel can flow at a given speed. Diesel engines have no use for a blow off valve as they do not have a throttle plate.

The chatter noise is very noticeable on World Rally Cars, where anti-lag is used.

A compressor stall like this can cause excess stress and wear on the turbo's shaft or bearings under higher load applications of the turbo (around 15 psi (1.0 bar) and greater depending on the trim and flow rate of the compressor side).

Actual wastegate flutter occurs instead under partial boost conditions such as partial throttle near the boost threshold. It sounds like FftFftFft not ShuShuShu and is caused by the rapid opening and closing of the wastegate at boost levels near the spring pressure. It is commonly heard more clearly and may be more prominent on cars with modified intake silencers, up-pipes, and or downpipes, and is not harmful.

Mine used to sound fantastic on lift off....until the PD150 went on and now it's silent with my Milltek :(

that does sound kinda mint

I think its funny how people want this sound, I'm wanting our standard Altea to quit making the noise as its well annoying :dull:

Surely there must be a reason for the noise if it stops with a turbo change ?

Blocked at work.... is this the Owl noise? My stock turbo did that, albeit very quiet, and eventually went pop. My hybrid doesn't B) Maybe the noise had nothing to do with it going pop.... I dunno.

I recently heard a vRS that had a ridiculously loud exhaust with the same owl noise (only MUCH louder). It just sounded like a very ill car to me??

it's just a straight through exhaust pipe ie no cat,no silencer

mine has a cat :p

yip it's the "Owl noise" lol I think it makes the car sound broken as well, which is the reason why I'm trying to get it fixed lol

Not for me i`m afraid. However, Johnny5ive`s car sounds schweeet

Different strokes for different folks and all that I guess...!

Hope you get it sorted :)

My turbo went pop too :D

all turbos have compressor stall as standard. the noise is masked with airboxs and boxs on the exhaust system

Why do all turbos have compressor stall?

Jesus Trev ....that sound evil ;)

i want that sound lol

this is full throttle on the rollers crap vid though but sound is alright

i want that sound lol

i just want speakers on my cpu :giggle:

  • 1 year later...

mine has a 2.25 straight through and cant get it to chatter at all :(

Mine didn't chatter with a 2.5 inch all the way. It's sounds horrible anyway

If you want the owl noise then chop of the backbox and replace just with a twin tip sounds great not a loud owl noise but sounds good on full chat and whistles on idle
