Oil Filter Tool

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me where I can get the oil filter housing/cap tool? Is it VAG only? While on the subject (I know covered before) is the oil spec 507 only for the 1.9? If anyone can suggest a brand etc.

Many thanks,

Robbie

You can use 506.01 or 507 for extended service intervals in 1.9TDi. 507 is the newer spec that incorporates the older 506.01. I buy the Quantum 507 oil off Ebay in packs of 4 x 5Ltr. There are 25Ltr drums of Morris Oils 507 oil on there at the moment for a very good price. I change it about every 10k miles.

Thanks STSKODA,

I have a good supplier near me so I'll see what he has and can do price wise.

The halfords part for removing the oil filter is ok to a point. Just make sure the socket you use is a perfect fit into the square recess, otherwise it will burr off at the corners, and make removal more difficult. To give you an example i tried to remove my oil filter on the old superb and it was well screwed on, and the tool stayed put on the actual filter while the square socket wore the edges off, rendering it useless. Had to improvise and in the end my dad and i used the prong of a garden fork and cut it to get a perfect fit in the square hole, we also used mole grips to turn the prong section, and hey presto it unscrewed.Unorthodox yes, but when halfords tools arent quite up to the job it pays to improvise :giggle:

Take your belt off, looop it over the filter house and twist, that's what I always did.

That could give the neighbours a nasty surprise!

Unfortunately, I'm way too OCD to use the belt trick, I'd have to use the tool. I'll see if my local indy can get me a real one... I have to say after all the teething problems have now been sorted (hopefully), I'm really enjoying the car. The only thing I'm considering is fitting lowering springs, not boy racer stuff, just a 30mm drop to tighten up the handling a bit. It is a bit of a boat after all...!!

Thanks for all the replies lads,

Robbie

miss the old days of removing the screw on oil filter by piercing it with a screwdriver and using it as a leverage...strange really as i never did screw it up that tight but dammed if i could undo it by hand 12k miles later !!

What belt was you using suppy? had visions of you using your trouser belt lol.

Go to a pound shop, they do rubber loop grip tools.

Thanks for that info.

From experience, the belt, piece of rope, clothes line, whatever, works but the location of the filter cover makes it hard to get at. Pound shop filter removal tools are usually rubbish but you can be lucky. The removal tool in Halfrauds (same as this one) is ok and gets a positive grip, it uses a 3/8 drive and so far I have failed to break it  . It also fits quite a few other filters.

Just found a 1/2 inch drive one here.

BTW I will be on M7,N7,M50,M3 next week

I got a multi fit tool today from a tool shop today. It's one of the three pronged claw types, fits from 70mm to 120mm. The 1.9 fitting is 92mm, so should be fine. It's made by Draper, so the quality is pretty good. It has a 3/8" socket drive on top and look's like it's fit for purpose, cost 16 Euro...

I'll keep you all posted when I use it..

Thanks for the replies,

Robbie

You can change the springs, but you will get much better handling improvement from changing shock absorbers.

I have been using Bilstein Sport B6 monotube gas shock absorbers on front and rear for 4+ years/80k+ miles now and they are fantastic both on country roads and on motorway. They still work as on the day I installed them, while OEM ones were too loose after just 15k miles.

Plus they're galvanized which makes a nice change from Konis (I used to have Konis on the Octavia and after 6 years the rear ones rusted through and one cracked and spilled :o )
