[SOLVED] Clunkedy clunk knockedy knock

Featured Replies

  • Author

When i had my fabia i had this problem! i changed the top mount bushs and it went away! It was a consistant clunk on full lock and when going slowly over bumps!

Maybe worth a try?

Mine happens going over small bumps and things (drain covers, bad roads etc) at any speed. I don't think I get any noise on full lock. I will try donuting it (hopefully in to a wall! ARGH!) at lunch time :)

Engine/Transmission mount.

I have just ordered my part and it is due to come today.

If the problem goes away tomorrow then happy days.

Mine clunks as soon as I hit the throttle in first and second and sometimes when I start up the engine.

If I coast (neutral) over a speed bump, not a sound but if I'm in gear and hit the throttle as I'm coming off the speed bump it will make the sound. Is yours the exact same problem or slightly different?

Already changed engine mounts. Not those...

Sounds like it could be the top mounts as they have bearings in them IIRC

Going from what you have already replaced it's going to be a case of elimination until you find which part it is.

Indeed. Bit of a PITA...!

I have heard about these top mounts a few times. Some bolts under the bonnet, presumably one is under the vacuum box? Are they fairly easy to replace?

FYI The knocking I experience kind of sounds like the noise produced by kicking or punching a tupperware box :giggle:

ok guys, i had the clunking sound over rough roads but NOT on bigger bumps/ undulations in the road except when dropping down off a speed bump, but not when going up! had the consoles changed and the rest checked and found to be in good order, gave ali a ring at unit18 (he did my consoles) he said sounds much like anti roll bar links, sure enough 2 new anti roll bar links later :) shes quiet as a mouse again :):)

You have to take the whole shock out, compress the spring and unbolt the top mount, you will need a hub seperating tool thing to get the shock off the hub.

It's an easy enough job providing nothing is seized

Hm. Interesting. Sounds like what I get.... except I have already replaced the ARB links. Hmmmmmm.

I'll go and man handle them at lunch time and see if they move or look fudged.

Thanks. Probably two tools we don't have then. Spring compressor and hub separating tool. Doh!

Right. I man handled the drop links and they weren't moving at all.

I've had Eibach springs sitting around for at least a year now. I got fed up and went ahead and bought Koni FSD's last night, and have ordered new bump stops and top mounts all round.

If the ARB bushes don't fix it, completely new suspension had better!!

I'll let you know...

I have just come to the end of a similar problem. Having replaced the rear shocks, top mounts and fitting Cupra console bushes the knocking continued. I had new ARB bushes fitted yesterday and this has elimated the knocking sound and the car now handles like new :)

You can tell if the ARB's are shot by turning the wheels on full lock, get someone to rock the car from side to side whist you watch the ARB's for excess movement.

I will be taking my Koni FSD shocks off very soon. You could have had them at a much cheaper price then brand spanking new (if it isn't too late to return?)

If anybody is getting this problem and thinks it's an engine mount, I ordered 2 (my mechanic is leaving the country for a while, needed the part before he was gone) so now I have another pefectly working engine mount available.

Will be up in classifieds once I upload pics and get home from work.

Thankfully, I have resolved my knocking sound. Good luck with yours Mr Cullen.

Sounds silly but are your suspension bolts tightly secured?

Good to know. I will do that later. It might just be that. I've ordered new bushes anyhow, and it looks like they should be straight forward to change. I hope it is that!

Thanks for the offer. I don't mind spending for brand spanking new suspension to be honest, unless yours were very low mileage??

All bolts seem to be nice and tight to me.

They have done around 10k miles. In my opinion it's not that much but then again it's your opinion that matters.

I would take £250 for them, think I have 1 person interested already. Do you think its a reasonable price?

Seems a good deal for only 10k miles to me. About a years mileage. My order already went through though, so I missed out on that one ;-)

How come you are getting rid? Am I going to regret the Eibach springs and FSD's? :giggle:

I've picked up all the bits today anyway, so will try fitting the ARB bushes tomorrow and let you know if that sorts it.

No way I love the combination. I had the same, Eibachs with Koni FSD's. I'm de-modding the car as I have to sell her :(

I'm a married man and could do with the cash towards a mortgage so I'm hoping to raise some funds through the car and will then have to downgrade.

Have a few other bits and bobs for sale, had alot of interest already.

My car is in classifieds 53k Corrida Red FSH asking £6,250. I know I won't get that so I will de-mod and then sell the car standard

Ah. That sucks :(

Didn't try the bushes yet as I haven't been feeling too well. It looks as if they can be replaced easily though so possibly tomorrow.

Okay kool, well hope it works for you.

Someone coming to see my car tonight, might get sold :(

What size ARB bushes did you order ? I'm going to order some powerflex ones but there is a few different sizes ?

I think mine are 18mm

  • 3 weeks later...

I've had two clunks on my VRS Octavia mk2.

First was the ARB. The car knocked whenever you went over a pothole, I thought it was the droplinks (£15 a pair on e-bay) but the knock continued. So my attention turned to the ARB. The bar is sprung steel coated in plastic. The plastic had worn away underneath the bushes. Visually it all looked fine. Anyway, I tried to bodge it with some toilet overflow pipe to fill out the gap under the bushes - no go. I then bought a new ARB and bushes which solved the problem.

Secondly I get a series of clunks as I turn the steering wheel. For diagnostics - open the bonnet and put your hand on the top of the mounting struts, then get someone to turn the wheel. If the bearings on the top of the strut are sticking then you will feel the mounting jump as the wheel is turned. I'm having it fixed next week by a local garage - £180 including 2 new bearing sets (apparently they are only sold in pairs).

Hope this helps

Glad you've got yours sorted.

I'm having a complete suspension overhaul fitted tomorrow, so hopefully that will sort it for me!

Koni FSD

Eibach Pro Kit

New top mounts / bearings

New trimmed front bump stops

New rear bump stops from Ibiza FR (67mm) to save chopping and gluing.

New FARB bushes

Then I just have wind noise to remove...

I'll reword - excessive wind noise.

People think the door is open or the window isn't shut properly...

;-)

He ran out of time and didn't get to do the ARB bushes, but I have the FSD's and Eibachs fitted, with new top mounts / bearings / bump stops.

The knocking *seems* to have reduced, but it's still there... but it kind of seems to be coming from the very front now rather than the passenger side. I think. Maybe. I am thinking maybe it's the FMIC / pipework. I'll have the front bumper off tomorrow I think....!
