[SOLVED] Clunkedy clunk knockedy knock

Featured Replies

I'm getting a muted clunking / knocking noise on rougher roads. It's there on speed bumps, but not really so noticable. It happens more on just rough bumpy road than anything.

I'm on Cupra bushes. That's the first thing I did when I got the car... about a year a go. Maybe they're worn already?!

I've just recently changed the "dog bone" and gear box engine mounts. This seemed to lessen it a bit and it's more of a muted clunking now. It does seem to have eliminated a clunking I got whilst rolling slowly and changing from neutral to first / second though.

I've changed the front drop links, though that was a few months a go now. I can't imagine they've gone again though?!

I'm not sure what else to check. Any ideas? Something to do with the suspension I guess?

Antiroll bar bushes?

Antiroll bar bushes?

I'd heard something about these somewhere. Are they easily replaced do you know?

I'd also read about some weld breaking on the exhaust near some cross member and it was the exhaust knocking. I presume that was the standard exhaust though. I've got a Milltek TB setup. Guess it could still be something to check?

Yeah pretty easy from memory.

The bushes are essentially a rubber tube that wraps around the ARB, think it's just a case of dropping the bar down taking off the old and puttin on the new.

I actually went back to OEM from Powerflex ones cos made things unduly crashy

Ah, sounds like those on the rear ARB just fitted. Didn't actually realise it has a front ARB. It's hard to tell where the sound is coming from :)

Easy stuff then. I'll have to pop to my local dealer and order them in then.

Thanks

ah yeah pretty much the same bushes as those wrapped around the Jabba bar just on a smaller scale on the front

Took the father for a drive before buying new bushes and he located it to the front passenger side. Said he could feel where it was coming from :-O I'd only ever heard it, and it sounded like the back to me. My poor passengers...

Anyway, there's a good few millimeters of side to side play on that wheel, so he reckons track rod end. Rocking the steering wheel quickly from side to side you could hear some clunking going on too.

Hopefully that's all it is! Will let you know.

Now... new question, new thread :-)

Open the bonnet and locate the two bump stops on the bonnet underside, screw them out one turn a side. Worth a try, as it sounds like a suspension fault when the bonnet is bouncing off the slam panel.

Awesome, thanks.

I have just unscrewed them a bit. Will let you know if it's done anything tomorrow.

mines doing exactly the same, took it to unit 18 and had the cupra bushes put in, he said that the arb bushes looked fine, and the car was perfect until a few days ago when its now started that muted knocking over a rough surface, as im a driving instructor i sit in the passenger side more than i do the drivers! and its definately coming from the passenger side! let me know how you get on mate. its doing my head in!

Unfortunately the bonnet bump stops didn't seem to make any difference.

I am going to get new track rod ends today and will hopefully get them changed over tomorrow, so I will let you know hopefully Saturday night / Sunday if that sorts it for me...

balljoint maybe?

ive got the same thing, and im certain its the front passenger side like yourself. how much are track rod ends? i got the car lowered a few weeks ago and altho it done it on speed bumps it didnt do it on the road altho i now notice it louder and it happens when on the road now so maybe that will help diagnose the problem? if i go slow on bumps it doesnt do it, again maybe another clue?

keep us informed

jordan

mine seems to do it more when turning aswell i.e if turning into a junction and the surface isnt too great, might replace both lower ball joints and drop links see what that does??! this cars driving me mad now!!!!

i get it when turning too, especially wen parking and using quite a bit of lock from one side to the next. i had shortened drop links fitted so wasnt a problem with the originals

Can't tell you if it has fixed it yet. They didn't have the parts in so ordered them in for yesterday... but I forgot I am on a course this week so can't even pick them up :(

I'll let you know Saturday.

Iv got exactly the same problem. Was going to change the track rod ends but this has put doubts in my mind.

What do the console bushes sound like when they perish? Does it create a clunking sound?

I had a nocking last year when setting off from a standstill and it's the only time it did it.

I replaced the droplinks, bottom ball joints and track rod ends and still no luck but then it magically disappeared over winter and now the sun is here it's back !

I'm thinking it's something to do with needing lubrication ?

Im thinking either top mounts or cv joints even though there not damaged/split ! Failing that, engine mounts....

I had a clunking when changing gear (1st and 2nd) and rolling slowly. That disappeared with the new engine mounts.

I'll try the front ARB bushes next. Are they easy to get to, to try spraying some grease in to them?

Really really getting on my nerves now. It happens when going over small bumps in the road, but doesn't seem to happen if both wheels hit a bump at the same time (aka speed bump).

I had a look at the ARB yesterday. It looks as if I have the 'new' ARB, so the stops coming away I guess shouldn't be a problem.

- Will replace ARB bushes

- Will replace ball joints

Any other ideas???

- Replaced 'console' bushes to Cupra bushes.

- Replaced 'dog bone' mount.

- Replaced top gearbox mount.

- Replaced ARB drop links a while back.

- Replaced track rod ends. This eliminated the wheel side to side play, but it is still clunking.

- Replaced all brakes and discs, and it is still clunking, so not a caliper bolt or anything.

When i had my fabia i had this problem! i changed the top mount bushs and it went away! It was a consistant clunk on full lock and when going slowly over bumps!

Maybe worth a try?

Engine/Transmission mount.

I have just ordered my part and it is due to come today.

If the problem goes away tomorrow then happy days.

Mine clunks as soon as I hit the throttle in first and second and sometimes when I start up the engine.

If I coast (neutral) over a speed bump, not a sound but if I'm in gear and hit the throttle as I'm coming off the speed bump it will make the sound. Is yours the exact same problem or slightly different?
