[SOLVED] Clunkedy clunk knockedy knock

Featured Replies

;-)

He ran out of time and didn't get to do the ARB bushes, but I have the FSD's and Eibachs fitted, with new top mounts / bearings / bump stops.

The knocking *seems* to have reduced, but it's still there... but it kind of seems to be coming from the very front now rather than the passenger side. I think. Maybe. I am thinking maybe it's the FMIC / pipework. I'll have the front bumper off tomorrow I think....!

FSD's...the best choice mate, same as mine, which I've had for 5years now...and you fitted new top mounts and bump stops, same as I did...some people reuse..IDIOTS!!! New ARB bushes might get rid of noise!

Front pipework hmmm....could be..just another game of hunt the squeak! B)

Just fitted new ARB bushes on the front of my Octavia 4x4 hatch, you wouldn't believe all the knocking and creaking these little things have cured. These bushes take some pounding on our Norfolk roads and the car now handles again !

I've had the front bumper off today and the top FMIC turbo pipe could have been knocking against the crash bar, so isolated that with some inner tube! Also found a missing screw on the drivers side wheel arch at the back (behind damper), so the wheel arch plastic was loose and could have been banging against the drop links. Result? No improvement :-( It's a very muted muffled kind of knocking...

Bassman: that's good to know! We're going to have a go at the ARB bushes tomorrow hopefully. Mechanic reckons taking drive shaft off, but I think you should be able to do it without that?

Drove the father to Yarmouth and back earlier (pick up Indian takeaway :-D) and he says it does sound exactly like the passenger side drop link has gone. They've only recently been replaced, but I have ordered some Meyle HD drop links just in case the ARB bushes do nothing... worth a go I suppose!

So I gave up for the day. And cleaned it. And ripped out the boot floor and laid some Damplifier Pro down :-)

I'll let you know how the ARB bushes go....!

Relatively quiet suspension!!

Stopped at a motor factors on the way back and managed to pick up a drop link until the Meyles ones arrive (I am desperate!). The passenger side at the bottom was COMPLETELY knackered. They couldn't have lasted long - only been on there a couple of months from what I remember!! Visually they looked fine, but the bolt was just spinning on the bottom and once it was out the joint moved incredibly freely.

There's still a bit of knocking, but I suspect the drivers side is probably knackered too.

Check your drop links, even if they look absolutely fine!

Many thanks all :-D

Will give my droplinks a check over and see what there like, if yours have gone after a few months then it could be the same case with mine.

Hey I'm tv same clunkery. clunk rumble. Should rename ot to skoda clunk. I got drop links repaces 10 months ago with the bushes. Now. Noise is back

I would prefer to buy powerflex or cupra than garage getting from local motor factor how do I know wot size to get??

It's a fabia estate 52 plate 1.9tdi

Definitely - but a visual check doesn't seem to tell you much. Not even checking for movement whilst they are attached seems to tell you much (mine was still very stiff to try and move?). Better to take them off I would say. If the nut just spins, it's a definite goner. If you get it off and one / both of the joints move really easily then there's your problem :-)

As above, definitely the first thing to check with a kind of muuffled clunking clonking noise.

I'm unsure of size, but I have got Meyles HD parts on order which are apparently stronger parts: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=178 They are for Fabia.

If it's the size of the console bushes (rear bush on front wishbone) then there is only one "Size"..the easiest to fit are the Powerflex ones as they don't require the console unit to be removed to press the bush in....other that that the best are the SuperPro ones!! B)

Not solved. Fitted the Meyles drop links on both sides at the weekend. There's still clunking but it doesn't seem as bad. Drivers side was also completely knackered, but apparently the remaining clunking wasn't that.

ARB bushes next then I guess. Hmph.

did you have your ball joints checked?

There pretty easy to replace providing non of the bolts are seized, I did mine last year and they came off no problem

Awesome. Ordered... I'll try them as well! Probably never been changed in the entire life of the car (123k miles).

What made you replace yours? Clunking knocking noises?

Will let you know what happens as always. Thanks.

May not be causing the noises that you are getting......but I would defo change them if they have done that mileage!!! B)

Same as you really, had a nocking noise when pulling off from a standstill so thought id just replace a few things in the same area which was ball joints, drop links and track rod ends and it solved it but has recently come back so I think it's the ARB bushes or drop links again.

I ordered mine from vwspares too and the service is excellent

Ah right. Hope you get yours sorted too then!

Hm. Just thinking.... my Cupra bushes were fitted shortly after I got the car... must be about.. 1-2 years now. Perhaps I have a bad one? How long do they typically last?

My parents Elegance also had them fitted about a month after mine and theirs is fine, however they don't use their car even half as much as I use mine!

Replaced ball joints with Meyles items. Needed doing. The drivers side was split at the boot and very easy to move.

Once again.... no change. It still clunks. :( It is *maybe* a little bit better. I only went for a quick drive around the block. The drive later will give a better idea if it's improved at all...

Guess we'll try the ARB bushes next weekend.

Hmpppppppph!

I've had noises on my fabia for a long time now (model 2003/1.9tdi), it's getting worse of late, there is a dull bumping noise coming from the engine bay when going over speed bumps. Now there is an added ratatat as well when doing the same, GREAT! (which sounds more like the clutch - eek!). My wishbone and antiroll bar bushes have been changed (standard ones) so I'm fairly certain it's not that. My car's still pulling heavily to where the camber points to. She's been 4 wheel tracked a few times and has had new tires, no difference. it wandered at one point so I (like a mug) had Colbornes Woking do the steering rack (600 quid!)My dad's got the same car and his does not pull as much.

I took to a garage and they could find nothing wrong, useless. They said "wait tillthe problem gets noisy and shows itself". thats what I'm doing, radio up till then.

(I'm feeling it's my front struts)

MOT tomorrow, they might find something this time, but I bet not!

I got my clunk fixed today, luckily for me it was the lower strut brace I had fitted, it had been removed when the cupra bushes were fitted and the bolt had come loose a little during the Castle Combe trackday. A bolt worth checking, as you look under the car they're the ones you can see which hang down at the lowest point of the wishbones.

Theres been a lot of talk of ARB bushes, my mechanic says it wouldn't be as they're not load bearing under acceleration/braking, he thought it would be ball joints, hope that helps some of you.

Lucky sod :)

I'm not convinced it's ARB bushes myself, but will try anything. I'm not sure which bolts you mean? Are they highlight-able in any of the pictures on http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/92625-fabia-wishbone-bush-replacement-diy-guide/?
