UH OH! Spoiler Paints gone Bad..

Featured Replies

Now, I've not been using my car all that much recently. For the past month it's been used once a week at most.

Looking out from my bedroom windows yesterday I noticed what I thought was bird muck on the spoiler.

Today I went out and just had a look as I walked by.. It's the lacquer failing :(

It seems to have happened over night though.. and seems quite bad.. it's not just fading, it's got bubbles 'n' moister under it and everything..

Not Happy.. Is a re-spray the only fix?

Humm..mine too has done this fairly recently (within last 6 months)

Started small but quickly spread and now looks a mess.

Also interested to see what people have done to fix.

I would say a respray would be the only option to fix

Correct!

Respray it is

Mines going a weird brown colour not rust??

I too have this problem, looks like a hideous mess at the moment. Supposing the paint is not damaged, could the spoiler not just be prepared and then lacquered over again?

This is what I was thinking? Sand back to the colour coat and have it re-lacquered?

If it was any other colour than black then wrapping it in matt black would have been an option.. but on a black car it'll look a bit odd.

Mines done this too on one edge, and the door mirror for the driver, and the door handles. Not covered by the paint warranty either. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Tempting to pop the bubbles with a pin, but I know that'll just make it worse.

I doubt it on plastic!

Do all of you with this problem have black paint? Black absorbs heat white reflects. may be the cause

Red. Although it's not as bad as Robs, and is older.

Carbon fiber wrap time

Carbon fiber wrap time

Not for me thanks.. Always taken the stance of if it aint real carbon fibre it doesn't go on the car.

Maybe it's a good time to paint the wheels a silly colour and wrap a few parts..... Pink? Gold? White?

That SE with the pink looks awesome to me.. it'd work on black in all, wouldn't it? ;)

A few of you lot have had these painted up before, aint cha'?

How much we talking? Sub a ton?

I paid £100 for mine to be fitted and sprayed

My mates is a 54 plate and it's awful. Mine is a year older and nothing wrong with it. Got two quotes so far, body shop want to remove paint it and the boot top £185 & VW place wouldnt remove and refit and insisted on a new one, £600+

Matt

This has happened quite badly to my car recently. About 60% of the laquer has gone. Rather than it slowly peeling off I used some carpet tape to lift the loose stuff off.

As soon as most of it is off I'll starting phoning around for some prices for a respray.

How much is this likely to be, from a "proper" body shop? £150?

I don't want to do it myself just incase I **** it up

Well mine has started this too (04 Fabia VRS).....noticed it about 2 month ago.

Anyway i took the car to my local dealer for rust problems to start a claim off and the paint techie insisted on taking photos to send off to Skoda UK as he said it was a very common problem...........

I'm not holding my breathe that Skoda will do anything regarding the spoiler but i hope that they sort the rust.....

Mine cost £60 and its really high quality, i used a different guy to spray my wheels and grille and the quality is no where near as good as the spoiler, il be going there when the wheels need doing again.

Think the Gaffa tape + Polish & Wax approach is the best for now.. can always get it painted later if it starts to look Baaaaaaaaad.

Not best impressed with the paint quality on these though.

Same issue with my 04 black vrs, looks a right mess now. You'd think the lacquer would last longer.

What's the likely hood of removing it without damaging the paint underneath?

Is it needed for high speed cruising like the lil tail lip of a TT? I'm not gonna flip over on the autobahn without it, am I? ;)

Normal Fabias don't have them. Don't see them doing backflips all the time. Even the might 2.0 survives. :D

What? Well of course not.. who ever heard of a car slaying a mustang whilst on it's roof? lol, although, from what I've heard... if any car could it'd be the mighty 2.0!

can't believe those 2.0 jokes are still doing the rounds....

from the looks of it i would say that's probably not the correct type of primer used at the factory hence the paint chipping off in flakes, the laquer should be as hard as nails,
