1.2TS1 gives 86 or 105 PS. How?

Featured Replies

just interested in how do they get the same size 1.2TSi engine to produce either 86PS or 105 PS.

Is it just the enginge ECU mapping? If so, could you buy the 86PS engine with 5speed manual for £670 less than the 105PS and just get it "tweeked" up to 105PS?

retiredbri - got nothing to do but wait for Slowda to make my car :wall:

Think it is just mapping but seeing as a map is going to cost around £250 plus warranty issues it's not really worth it.

I think I read somewhere that the 86ps has a smaller fixed geometry turbo, whereas the 105ps has a larger variable vane turbo. Might be wrong though.

I don't think any of our petrols are using VNT as yet.

I'm sure I read somewhere that BMW use exactly the same engine in the MINI One and the Cooper. The only difference is that the throttle in the One is restricted to 85%, and the Cooper opens 100%. It might be as simple as that.

I'm sure it will be an electronic restriction, it's by far the cheapest way of doing it.

The SEAT Ibiza Cupra and FR are identical aside from map, one 150 bhp, the other 180.

Different turbo and different map. Same as 140 and 170bhp 2.0CR TDi's.

The old 1.4 Rover engines came in two outputs, the lower powered version had a plastic restrictor in the throttle body. Change the body or remove the plastic and hey presto full power.

I don't know if there's different turbos but i do know that the 105Hk engine wants 3,6 litres oil and the 86 Hk is satisfied with just 2.4 litres. It must be some difference between them?

Oil cooler circuit perhaps?

To be honest probably is some minor mechanical differences, expect it will be turbo or intercooler related. Both units I am sure could be remapped to produce more power than standard but the top output might vary between the two units.
