Tom Tom in Fabia... Hard Wire Solutions?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I have just got myself a tom tom and i am looking at an easy and tidy way to hard wire it. Am i right in guessing im best to go for the fuse box? I am looking for ignition live, which fuse should i tap in to?

I am open to suggestion, so if there is a better method i would be very grateful to hear your ideas....

The wires into the fusebox are all taped together and difficult to access. Best place to tap into wires is at the Voltage Control Unit under driver's side of the dash.

There's a choice of two wires. The connector block XS4 which is brown in colour and has 18 connections. Black wire labelled 12 is the ignition switched live (only on when engine running). Wire labelled 2 which is a brown/red wire is the accessory wire going to the stereo, which turns off when the key is removed from the ignition.

Do be careful though, bad things can happen if you draw too much amps from wires intended for less. Generally the worst that would happen is a fuse would blow - the way around this is to wire in using a fuse and relay. I think the tomtom charger only draws about 1a though so I think it should be safe.

Great thanks for the advice. Is it easy to access? I assume I remove the dash panel under the steering column?

I'm thinking of just wiring into my cigarette lighter tbh

Isn't that permanent live though? Or would it be ok if the unit is unplugged after use?

Most obvious ignition live would be the stereos?

It's actually quite easy to get to and route around once the stereos out. I used it for my Nokia handsfree that lives behind, and on top of the glove box.

Also means you can buy the not needed adapter harness and cut into that rather than the OEM wiring loom (unlike me.. I really should have thought that one out more, lol)

How will you get past having it on display all the time? I'd be interested in how this works out and how easy it is to do. But having something so easily nickable always wired in would put me off slightly.

I think OP means they want a USB connector up near the dash so they don't have to plug into the centre console and have that cable go all across the handbrake, gear lever etc. There was an interesting picture posted on here once of someone custom integrating a USB power socket into an air vent. But you're right, nothing can stop a smash and grab, even a car alarm.

So, i got home from work tonight and thought i would take advantage of some extra light. I went to halfords to buy a cigarette lighter socket, and proceeded to wire in to my aftermarket stereo/iso connector. Connected up and all works fine, although like an idiot i connected to the permanent live rather than the ignition!! I carefully followed the colour coding on the JVC website but forgot that VAG group have them the other way round!!! Looks like i'll be getting the insulation tape out tomorrow to wire to the yellow instead of the red!! Also crossed my mind while im at it that i may buy one of those adaptor things that has a USB connector on it to, so i can then run that cable to the drawer under the radio and have a phone charging point too!!

I have mine plugged into the ciggie lighter, then an ciggie lighter extension lead takes it under the central console, on the passenger side. The tomtom (navigon in my case), then plugs into the extension lead which is tucked up behind the central console (in the area of the airbag module). The lead then navigon's power lead then come up behind the stereo to poke out a switch blank with the corner filed off. The switch blank next to it is completely taken out and the navigon's mount adapted to fit into the hole. It works *really* well, isn't visible and no wire tapping required.

Yes all sorted now, will be routing the wire the same way as I did the Mic for the stereo so.should be pretty slick in the end.
