Wrong engine oil ?

Featured Replies

Ocy 1.9 TDi year 2000 AHF engine, mechanics changed the engine and looks as though he's put 20-50 oil in to see if there are any problems, will it do any harm for say a week of running around and then changing it for 505.01 with a filter change ? and would he have had to break into the aircon fluid and recharge it ? cheers - Stuart :wonder:

Don't rev the engine too hard. The 20W50 is too thick, and will cause tappet pump up at high revs if nothing else.

There is no need to touch the aircon for anything other than an aircon service, so if he's been in there without instructions <censored>!!

Hi Stuart

Just had a look at the Haynes manual re engine oil spec for your engine on a std distance time service interval, and it states SAE 5W/40 to 20W/50.

So your engine oil is within spec, but IMO is prob a little too thick when the oil is cold for the UK climate.

However, if you take it easy until the engine oil has got up to temp you should be OK.

But the engine has been changed, that would mean that the compressor which is attached to the engine would have been disconnected before being refitted to the replacement engine, so all the gas would have needed to be replenished.

 Hi all, thanks for the replys, I am going to my dads tonight to reset the airbag light so I will see if the aircon works, when I change the oil and filter I will give it a warm up and a good drain off before putting in the fresh oil. cheers - Stuart

Update - Changed the oil to 505.01 inc new filter, cleared the airbag light, checked the air con and it won't work so I assume its been degassed, how much will it be to refill it ? cheers - Stuart

Check the inside of the air-con clutch is there.... it might have fallen off before you go for a regas.

Looks like this:

You will have the outer bit (otherwise the aux belt would be slack), but the inner bit may have vanished/be sitting on the engine tray (as arrowed, below):
