Skoda 7 day free insurance

Featured Replies

It appears that the main purpose of the 7 day free insurance is to enable the dealer to tax the vehicle without any delays. My intention is to set this up with the certificate being emailed delay free immediately to the dealer. Once the car has been taxed, the free cover can then be cancelled and the existing insurance company/broker notified of the vehicle change to coincide with the day the car is collected. This way there are not two policies running side by side for the same vehicle. Also with the free 7 day cover, any unforeseen hold ups such as the DVLA which could potentially put back the original collection date should be catered for.

Just wondered how most who have taken the free 7 day cover have dealt with their current insurance regarding changeover ?

When you call the company for the 7 day cover, they will ask for all the usual details. Whilst they will give the free cover, its also an oppotunity for them to give you a quote for the new car! I just changed my details with my existing company when the 7 days expired, but no doubt I will get a call from the Skoda insurance when the renewal is due.

I should have added that as I have a cherished number plate, the old car and new car bear the same reg.

Using this offer with other car makers was only asked for the barest details (not even claim history required).

When offered the Skoda version without FULL insurance history (incl exact dates) they were not prepared to offer it...

I think if you supply all the details (takes ages on the phone) you get their on the spot quote.

In the end it was too much bother so declined offer as simple to change car with existing insurance. Its supposed to make it easier....More like a selling oppoertunity for Skoda insurance (which is an outsourced product, and not Skoda).

I used it, but was told by (Skoda insurance who told) the dealer that it couldn't be used for private plate transfer. I ended up taxing on a non private plate on the 7 day, then transfering the plate after (it really shouldn't be that difficult.....)

Hi Bassa.

Don't worry, it's not illegal to have 2 insurance policies on the same vehicle, but is IS illegal to claim off both policies for the same accident.

Personally, I wouldn't be too wary of allowing Skoda Insurance (Is it Allianz? Can't remember) to make an offer for the full year insurance. Their offer to me was around 50% of my normal insurer's quote (nothing unusual in my 45-year driving record or requirements). Of course they may be just trying to capture me with a steep increase after year 1, but I can always jump ship again.

I used the free seven day insurance last week about five minutes on a freephone number to set up.

Also arranged my existing insurance to run from the same day, plus going to get £45 back as Yeti in a lower insurance group.

I used the free insurance when I bought my Superb, did not take very long to sort. You do have to give your driver and claim history, but it really does not take long and saves a lot of hassle in trying to arrange and get the insurance certificate to the dealer. I notified my own insurers of the transfer just as the policy was due to end, no need to cancel the 7 day free one, just let it lapse and thats it. When your existing policy is due for renewal, Skoda insurance will provide a quote for a full 12 months at that point with no obligation to take it up, for me it was more expensive than my own insurers so it was ignored.

I used the 7 day free insurance and also changed over to Skoda Insurance (Alianz) as their quote was so much better than any others I got at the time, and my insurer at the time wanted silly money compared to SI. It was all very simple. I don't have a private plate...........

My main concern really is not with taking the 7 day free insurance. In that case I would need a projected collection date from the dealer, arrange that date with my insurers only to find that the collection date becomes delayed probably due to the cherished plate transfer. In that case it would be back to the insurer to amend the start date requiring another certificate and even that could possibly change yet again. It appears to me that the 7 days free insurance would overcome this potential problem. At least then the two insurances for the same car could either run side by side until the free one expires or the free one could be cancelled on the day of collection providing the prime insurer then had the correct start date. The cause really is the cherished plate transfer and the rather erratic timescale involved. Perhaps putting it on retention earlier would have been wiser, although more expensive.

Unless Im missing what your are really trying to say.... you take the free seven days insurance which starts when you collect the car from the dealer.... that then allows you to drive off fully insured and gives you seven days to sort your 'proper' insurance out - plenty of time. :) Its what Ive done with the VRS and the Yeti and it works really well. I went with Skoda Insurance also as their cover was exceptional and the cheapest for me!!

The potential for delay is with the plate transfer, normally very straightforward with a new reg. Although the dealer can provide an accurate collection date it is possible for this to be put back due to unforeseen DVLA plate transfer delays. This is where the 7 day free insurance comes in because without it the 'proper' insurance must have an accurate start date otherwise it remains covering the old but same reg car. For example say the collection date agreed in advance is the 1st day of the month. The certificate is posted from the insurer's to the dealer showing the 1st of the month to enable them to go ahead with plate transfer & registration. The car itself is ready on the 1st of the month but due to a delay either with the certificate in the post or plate transfer, that collection date has to be put back. Another collection date is decided and the insurers have to be notified to provide the amended certificate to keep the cover on the old same reg. car. Further delays could alter the collection date yet again. So what I'm trying to say is that the free 7 day cover would avoid these potential pitfalls that can occur with plate transfers.

My original enquiry was how most deal with the temporary free insurance and main insurance. ( A ) Let it expire running the two insurances side by side ( B ) cancel it as soon as the new car is collected or ( C ) only inform the main insurer of the vehicle change once the free cover has expired.

Clear as mud?:dull:

Confucius should have said "Man who runs in front of car gets tired, man who runs behind car gets exhausted."

The skoda 7 day insurance starts on the day of pickup so a few days after that ive rang round the companies to get 'proper' quotes. I give the start date of the 'proper' insurance as the last day of the temporary 7 day cover, therefore the cover runs continuously. :)

I took the seven day insurance (and I have a private plate too, albeit it did not have to be transfered from my Audi as I bought it specially for the Yeti). When they did the full year's quote they were miles cheaper than anyone out there so they naturally got my business. Pleasure to have been dealing with them thus far for sure.

I took out Skoda annual insurance after 7 day insurance as price was excellent and cover better than most. Telephone contact setting it up was painless.
