Greenline I mid-life upgrades

Featured Replies

Right guys - some of you may have seen me lurking in the Yeti forum (sorry...) and around here.

I am in the process of trying to decide whether to swap my SUPERb (it really is brilliant) Greenline (1.9) for a Yeti.

But is there another way???

What could I do to my Greenline to improve/change it (a change being as good as a rest) to persuade me to keep it?

I am thinking of these things - can you think of any pros/cons? Oh and a guide price to do the work wouldn't go amiss!

1) Leather seats - hmmmm. Pros - they look and smell great. They might be different to sit on too. Cons - hot in summer, cold in winter, unless they can be retro fitted with heating too!

2) Stereo upgrade - I'm on Bolero (I think) at the moment - the base-ish model - single front loading, no SD card. Pros - better iPod inteface(?), Bluetooth(?) and bettter tuneage (more sounds). Cons - cost (?).

3) Sunblinds for the back - nippers get sun in their eyes...pros - they can divert their energy to whinging at me. cons - fitting?

4) New gucci wheels - the std fit Greenline units are ok, but not exactly sexy. Pros - looks bling init. Cons - lose some economy?

5) Roof bars - I never got them - fitting them would give more boot to the dog on those long journeys...Pros - dog isn't twisted up like Boxing Helena. Cons - lose a bit of economy. Cost of bars (£90-180).

6) tuning - I have seen a £30 thing on fleabay (very suspicious), but is there a tuning option for the 1.9 that doesn't completely destroy the Greenline mapping? Pros - a little more shove. Cons - it doesn't work or just costs a fortune.

7) Xenons - can you even fit them aftermarket?

8) Spare wheel - we got a puncture in the winter. I opened the green slime, but didn't insert it. I know it is deleted from Greenlines to save weight, but how easy is it to fit in the spare well? Pros - wont be stranded ever. Cons - extra weight. Cost?

I think that is all I can think of for now, other ideas greatfully received. Bluetooth is an interesting one - I never needed it before, but recently thought about it as I have had to make more calls on the move (or not - pulling over is a pain, but necessary these days without handsfree).

Can only really comment on this line. An absolute must from new for me. Having had a Merc Vito Dualliner as my past "car" and being stuck with a can of Cr@p at the side of the road and a total blow out on the A19 one cold wet night and waiting over 2 hours for a tyre company to come on a call out to fix it means the £140 (I think) for a spare and wheel infill kit was a no brainer.

I can't really see it making much difference to the mpg. On a recent trip to Northampton the, albeit over generous, computer was registering 71.8 mpg avg.

I love my Superb despite a few missing items as I ordered one that was already built and ready to ship as opposed to waiting the 1/2 year on the list.

Hope this helps make your mind up

lower it ! eibach did a test on a car (cant remember which one) and when lowered with their springs it showed an increase in fuel econemy by 7% - mainly due to the reductuion of underbody turbulences. Would also improve handlebar and looks. Only possible con is the ride might be slightly firmer.

Ah, but the Greenline is lower anyway - so would lowering it more help? presumably yes, but would the ride comfort suffer accordingly?

- £1000 + for a nice leather re-trim.

- Coloumbus in mine with MDI - LOVE it.

3) Sunblinds for the back - nippers get sun in their eyes...pros - they can divert their energy to whinging at me. cons - fitting?

- Tint it instead. Limo would be my choice, but some dont like it. (£150-200)

- Fit Original Skoda wheels, then insurance wont increase, as you wont have to admit to them, unlike aftermarket thingy's. (£160 (ish) ea for 18")

- I like my engine, so wouldnt trust these!

7) Xenons - can you even fit them aftermarket?

- Yes, but unless you fit projector lights, with self level and washers, they are illegal.

- Buy one from a crashed car on eBay. Golf, passat will do.

Thanks Al - I will keep my eyes peeled for a full Superb interior. I will look at wheels (I was going to go the Skoda route). I meant Skoda Xenons. roger to the tuning and spare wheel. I could tint the windows - they are "sundim" or whatever the standard darkening is, nut could be darker.

I dont see why you cant retro fit Skoda Xenon's, but i think you'll be talking mega bucks..!

Definately get the spare wheel, I got one for mine from my dealer (£100 with tyre and pllastic insert for jack etc) and used it for the first time yesterday when I kerbed the nearside front and took a chunk of rubber out of it(another story!) No apparant impact on the MPG, I think it was only deleted to keep the CO2 rating low.

I wouldn't lower it any more, I've already lost the rearmost part of the underside tray on speed humps!

Bolero has a six disc changer built into the headunit, its not single CD at all. The headunit can also read MP3 format files from all of the six loaded CDs.

As for number 6, avoid those so called tuning boxes (contain cheap 50P resistor) like the plague if you value your engine and get a proper remap and the car will be transformed.

I evidentally have the stereo below Bolero.

As for tuning, I didn't know whether anyone offers an upgrade to the 1.9, but I suppose someone must.

Swing - that's the badger.

Plenty of tuners for the 1.9. Revo rings a bell from when I was in the UK. Drove several tuned 1.9s from Ibizas to Alhambras. All were transformed from (good) standard cars. Yours would feel like a different car.

Nothing wrong hanging out with us you know! We don't bite! :giggle:

Now... I can see you have an itch and I'm not here to tell you how lovely the Yeti is vs your SUPERb. You know the pros and cons already (TINY boot compared to yours to name but the one obvious failling going the Yeti way - if you have a Yeti with a spare wheel anyway).

But there is one other argument here. Adding all these things to your car will add nothing to its value. Not a penny. The thousands you might spend you will never see again as later add ons like this are worth even less than factory options come selling time. The only way to solve an itch and not lose tons of money is to change cars in my book.

Two options: get a Yeti or just get a better specced Superb. In either case you will lose less money than adding these things to your existing car.
