Dodgy Air-Con

Featured Replies

I'm wondering if anyone else on this forum has ever suffered problems with their air-con/heater controls. I've got an 03 Fabia TDi Estate which has recently developed an intermitent fault with the heater and/or A/C.

On short journeys everything seems to be O.K. On long journeys the system either kicks out hot air only, or hot air/freezing air - nothing in between. I suspect it is the control mechanism which has gone. It's booked into the local dealer for "investigation" but the tone of the conversation with the warranty bloke makes me think I'll be in for a battle to get it replaced.

Anybody suffered similar problems? Anybody had any joy with warranty replacement?

Cheers,

G

Sounds similar to mine although I only noticed it literally 2 days ago. I noticed that if the air con is turned on and the setting is at the very minimum of the dial, then it pumps out cold air no problem, very cold air in fact. However, turn it even about 3 notches up (i.e. still very close to the minimum) it seemed to stop working and just chucked out warm air.

Maybe I'll get mine checked out sometime too.

Wasn't this problem discussed before on here, something to do with the way the thermostat regulates the temperature by either blowing hot or cold air?

Yes, it was. I have the same problem. I don't think it has anything to do with the air-con - it's just the heating.

It was my good self that had the said problem on a 51 TDi. I assume you have the climatic heating system- (Manual dials with 18 degrees, 20 degrees settings). If so it's the climatic control sensor that has packed up as it was in mine. This part unfortunantly is not too readily available, mine came as special order from Czech taking 2 weeks.

Symptoms are similar to what you describe. I had reasonable temperature at coldest setting, but any degree of heat resulted in it sticking at that heat and boiling you to death!

That sounds about right, even on about 20 degrees it feels WAY hotter than that. I think I'm going to ask about it at the next service.

Indeed..

Result of it is the Heater Control Unit is faulty - there definitely has to be a bad batch and I am surprised there's not been a recall - I have a 52 plate, so its been going on since then.

Is the heater control unit different from the climatic sensor?
