Converting from Halogen to Original Xenon

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was always interested in having the best lighting for my vehicle as i always travel at night, i had tried a lot of after market HID lamps and all of them were useless, so i had decided to buy two full sets of original xenon head lights with their DS1 lamps and transformers and installed them on my Octavia ambient which originally had came with halogen lamps.

Once i installed them and plugged them i had faced two serious problems:

- The xenon lights were only working when the engine is stopped, once i turn the ignition on the xenon lamps starts to flash (I think it happens because the xenon lights needs huge amount of electrical current which is not available in ambient because it's designed for halogen lamps.)

- The second problem was that the leveling motor didn't work as the ambient is equipped with a knob inside the cabinet to fix the beam level manually and the motor inside the halogen head light has only three wires, while all xenon lights usually come with auto leveling sensors so the motor has totally different wires. (4 wires)

The first problem was fixed temporary by the following:

- I had installed a relay beside the left head light

- The relay is getting a direct current wire from the battery

- I had cut the wire which is feeding the low beam before the head light and used this wire as a signal to power on the relay.

- the output of the relay is feeding the two low beam wires going toward the two head lights

- After that the xenon lights run successfully but now the error lamps on the dash board is always running because the circuit of the low beam is open

And i couldn't find any solution for the second problem (The leveling motors), maybe if I know the voltage used for those motors, and the wiring diagram for the 4 wires motor, i could connect them directly to the knob inside the cabin.

"A friend told me that the Skoda dealer can modify the software to make the output current feeding the low beam higher, do you think it's true?"

I hope some people here would have a better idea than mine for those issues.

Thanks

Hi mate and welcome along.

Firstly I'm really surprised about your comment regarding after market HIDs, I for one have been running a set for a few months and frankly compared to a colleagues OE ones I think mine are superior, you will find there are a lot of members running them also with no complaints.

Anyway the second problem I can't help you with, however the problem with the lamps flashing could be down the the settings on controller 9, basically because all the headlights in the Octavia 2 are projector, they will except halogen or xenon. When I fitted my HIDs I went for the non CAN bus type then a fellow member recoded controller 9 via VCDS to 'Xenons without shutters'. I can't be positive, but if you have this done I think it will eliminate the flashing problem.

Hope that makes sense, Lee.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for your help, i will try to recode controller 9.

but by the way, not all octavia 2 comes with projector head lights, mine had came with non projectors lights and used H7 lamps for low beam, half of the problem was that the head lights are not projector type, and the second half was caused that there is no good after market HID kit's in my country, all of them are China made with almost 50$ price, they are totally useless, that's why i decided to buy the full set of original head lights which cost 1200$, once converted them to flat beam, i can't compare them to the old ones any way, they are brighter 2 or 3 times, and they have a very wide spread.

Thats interesting, I'm sure I've never seen a mk2 Octavia with anything other than projector type head lamps! :S

Perhaps they are a different spec in your country.

My HID kit was only around £45, I went for a 5000k version (OE is about 4300K) and the light is a crispy white, compared to the halogen, there is simply no contest.

Just remember that after-market HID kits are a grey area (legality) right now and almost certainly set to become illegal once the new MOT changes kick in.

Those quite clearly state checking for the self-levelling and washer system on HID equipped cars.

I'm in the process of getting rid of my car and my new one has Xenon's fitted.

If however I was looking to change bulbs/lights in my car right now I'd stick with the best halogen bulbs I could buy - definitely will still be legal once the new MOT changes kick in.

Tbh, I'm not concerned about this spurious new rule, my mechanic and MOTer hasn't heard about it yet and he is very 'friendly' anyway, if neccessary its only a 20 minute job to swap them out for halogens for the MOT. And I find it difficult to believe the Police are going to stop cars to check, fair enough, boy racers with blinged up Corsa's but not what on the surface looks like a sensible car. Just incase though I have added a set of dummy washer covers to complete the look and because they are fitted in projector lamps they look completely OE.

All academic for the OP anyway as he is from Syria, so the same legal bulls**t probably doesn't apply.

Just playing Devil's Advocate - but there were two members of the police force who posted over at Pistonheads who indeed said they were supposed to be looking for aftermarket HIDs in the not too distant future.

Apparently there has been a pack circulated which explains how to find them - not the easiest thing to do, but can be done.

Not saying you'll get caught, but they are certainly cracking down on it.

As for your "friendly MOT tester" I'm afraid that makes me sick.

The thought that some guy will let anything pass it's MOT for the right kind of money or for "mates" makes me so mad.

Because if he'll let your lights slip who is to say he won't let far more dangerous things "pass".

People who do not do proper MOT's should be fined so much and have their MOT ability removed immediately and never be allowed to get it back.

I do have a xenon kit on mine and soon, when I have €€€, I will put the Auto-leveling kit

They cost around 100€, heard it could be a little hard to do but nothing with a days work.

The hard part, I heard, is hooking the wires up to control the up/down off the headlight.

So a question for all of you can the auto levelling be fitted to halogen projector lights with hids? Also was the lights enabled in vagcom as that might b the issue

All RHD cars are Projector types, and Halogen and Xenon , but LHD (at least O2 pre FL) with Halogen are "normal" , without any lenses. I had one previously.

Hmmm! :dull:

Had any one tried to install the three wires leveling motor (used for manual leveling) inside the Xenon headlight?

if this is possible this will solve the problem and no need for re-wiring or buying the auto leveling kit.

Any ideas?

Faris.

Hi Man,

I didn't try to recode in vagcom, once i recode i will share it with you to let you know if it works or not.

also I will try to fit the old motors (from my old headlight with out auto leveling) inside the new Xenon lights, if they were fitted, there will be no need to go through the very hard procedure of installing the auto leveling system.

Hi All.

I had recoded and it works. (And i was surprised that the coming home and leaving home functions can be activated in vehicles without light and rain sensor, and i had activated them)

Today I will try to install the old motors (that works with the knob) on the new headlights.

I will share the result here after I finish.
